MSD Location Problem

OK, where has everyone who is using an MSD 6AL put there's? It seems like the only place for me to put it is either where the radiator overflow tank is or on the other fender where the charcoal canister used to be.

With the Charcoal canister location, its hard to get to and I have to run my electrical farther.

With the overflow tank location (my prefered), I have to relocate/replace the overflow tank with something small enough to fit in what little room I have left over (read, I have yet to find a suitable small replacement tank.

HELP!!! :hb

Located MSD box on my 72 on the inside surface of the right front fender, just above the vacuum valve. Unit is accessible through the outside vent. Not sure if this location will work for you. I do not have the overflow tank.

Hello Jinx..
I mounted mine on the right fenderwell below the overflow tank . Its been there with no problems for 20K miles. Some cooler air is back there by the gills too.
My mounting pics are here..

Good luck..

Inside

Mines mounted right next to the passengers right leg, behind the kick panel. Very easy to get to, away from engine heat, water (rain) and can't be seen. Easy to wire, right through the firewall, and done.;)

Mine is in the rear jack compartment. You can come have a look at it anytime you want.

MSD PICTURES

Here are a few pics of my MSD install. If you want anymore let me know and I will see what I can do. In one of them you will see a toogle switch that was installed to keep the car from starting if it is not on.

Tim, now there is an excellent idea!!! I had never given those boxes a thought! I dont have jack in mine, so it would be an excellent place for the 6AL. I assume that you had to extend the cable that goes between the box and the distributer? Did you just splice into it, or buy an extension of some sort?

I do want to get by and see your Vette. Last week and this have been very hectic for me (its budget and review season, along with Thanksgiving). I should have more time in the coming weeks. I'll give you a shout. Could you send me an email with your phone number?

Man, thanks, you just solved 3-4 problems I was having and just not thinking it through. Great Idea. :duh

Just give me a call on my cell. I'm stuck on Jury duty starting tomorrow and don't know how long that will last. My cell is 214-673-6602

A great place to mount an MSD Ignition, especially the 6-series units, is up in front of the radiator core support. I do this on a flat plate mounted at the bottom of the core support.

The advantages of this spot are 1) it keeps the ign. box cool and 2) it puts the box as far as possible away from any sound system components you may have. MSDs are great radiators of RFI and putting the box way up front reduces that problem as much as possible.

Will the box get wet? Well, yeah, the outside will but the guts of an MSD are potted so it's not going to short out. I've run an MSD on my 71 BB Coupe for ten years this way driving in all kinds of weather.

I put mine on the Right Front Whel Well facing the A/C valves and heater box. I have used it or 5 years and no problems with the box. The Brass gear onthe MSD distributor has been a different story.

The Brass Gear apple cored after about 10,000 miles. I was cruising along nicely at 65 and the car died. I thought the 6 AL box died, but after doing all the checks happened to crank motor with Cap off Distributor and saw it wasn't spinning. From what I am told this is a relatively common occurance for the Brass gears. I am not sure I buy it. Car is running great again but I think I am going to drop the pan this winter and take a peek.

I did use a cam button when I set this motor up.

It is a common occurance with brass/bronze distributor drive gear ... consider yourself fortunate that you got 10K miles. Do you have a roller cam? If not, you don't need/want a bronze gear. Also, some roller cams do not require bronze gear. Also, HV oil pumps put a bit more stress on gear. Also, by removing the o-rings on MSD stem-base, a bit more oil will squeeze by & flop onto the gears ... stock distributors don't have o-rings. All that aside ... take a look at Nelson Crozier's gear ... btw, he's a pro w/ gobs of experience supplying top teams ... his site may suck but his stuff don't.

Thanks for the info. I am running a full Roller Set up. The car really runs good. I had been told not to worry about the gear doing any damage internally but as I said witht he car down for the winter I mayy drop the pan just to check it out. Thhanks for the info.
