Mystery gray gunk in bottom of turbo 350 trans pan!

Upon removal of my trans pan on my th350 i saw grey film mixed with trans fluid. I scooped up some with screw driver, then lowered a magnet to 1/8 above grey matter. the grey matter jumped to the magnet. What could this have come from? the car has 100k miles from prior owners. Should i be concerned? also were the tranny pans painted from factory? thanks for help. Aaron1

I've seeen that "gunk" in almost every TH350 I've ever dropped the UNPAINTED pan on. The reason it's there is the filter you went in to change. Yes, it's the results of wear, mostly from the clutch plates. I'd be shocked if at 100K miles if it weren't there!

Yep. And every other trans too. Combination of clutch material, bearing/bushing wear, planetary gear wear, you name it. It's no worry unless there are big chunks laying in the pan or stuck on the magnet.
