A regular season of stark realization over just how hard a sell motorsports currently is has become an offseason of navel-gazing for those who promote events. Indeed, times are rancid. NASCAR contested, arguably, its greatest Chase for the Championship to weak attendance and television ratings and the IZOD IndyCar Series continued to battle its own similar realities despite presenting yet another tight championship battle.

Much of the consternation within the industry involves how to rekindle an interest not only among the market-moving 18-to-34-year-old demographic, but also in children who are, for various reasons, losing interest or never getting a chance to gain interest in racing. It's somewhat ironic that the sport has lost that precious swathe of society as its drivers -- especially in NASCAR -- skewed increasingly youthful the last decade.

As far as NASCAR they need to back up 10-15 yrs when interest was growing .

Right:thumb Then they might start racing stock cars that, at least, look like stock cars. This "level playing field" produces boring races and a "sameness" that is causing long-time fans to lose interest. I used to really enjoy going to a few races a year. I live in the heart of NASCAR country now, and haven't been to a race since I moved back. Bring back the thrills and competition of the 80s, and make it economically possible for small and start-up teams to make a living.

Agreed ,I stopped going and stopped watching .Does Nascar care ?Not really.

I agree about the cars being too much the same. Now, that being said, the racing has never been better. Not talking about the Chase format.

In 1973 Benny Parsons won the Cup. He had one win, that was the only race he led a lap. It might have been the only one he finished on the lead lap. It used to be common on short tracks for the winner to be 3,4,5 laps ahead of 2nd. 5 or 6 cars on the lead lap was rare, even on the long tracks.

They really do have problems getting young fans. The problem with a lot of the fans that came along in the 90s, they weren't race fans they were nascar on tv fans. If they could attend a race, that was good too.

A lot of fans just faded away, some were driven away by the cost. Although we've been to a couple of nationwide races, Richmond in May 04 was the last cup race.

While Indy car seems to be on the upswing, they mostly were their own worst enemy.
