micropile_picture.jpg

Micropiling is continuing in the Skydome today and should wrap up soon. Pictured is the brace that connects the micropile to the spire. The steel shaft is filled with a low mobility grout. This brace is just below the surface and is welded to the shaft. Then the brace is connected to the spire with 18 bolts.

Once this is completed, the micropiling will move outside the Skydome. At that point, construction crews will come into the Skydome to make sure it is safe and continue the removal process of the remaining three cars which will take a few more weeks.

Thanks for the update! I've been super-busy at work. Are all of the Corvettes safely out of the sinkhole?

For shame. :confused You should never let work interfere with Corvette business! As far as I know, there are still three in the abyss.

After I wrote my note, I got Googling and found the same thing; 5 out, 3 still in.

One of the interesting notions I read is the proposal that a couple of the Corvettes… specifically the 1,000,000th and the 1,500,000th, be displayed as recovered rather than restored. The justification was interesting. These two Corvettes are collectible for no other reason than their VIN and are likely grievously damaged but, as the old saying goes, they are only original once.

My initial reaction was I thought the author was joking but as I gave it some thought, I reconsidered. It might be a good draw for the museum.

Your thoughts?

Mac

Interesting. I understand the thought behind it.
Also would be interesting to see the damage to the some of vettes preserved as part of the history of the museum.

MMmhh. K, my 2 Euro Cents: I was pondering why they would restore them and with what? They don't have parts for either that are not 100%. Ie. The parts they would use would not be from the 1Mil or 1.5Mil Car, so whats the point of restoring them at all with parts that really have no business being on the cars? Though the thought of seeing them the way they get recovered will be sad to see, but might be the best of no real good options. :ugh
:w

I've seen cars displayed in museums, as raced, as discovered, as driven, as discovered and as restored, but I'm not certain "as crushed in a sink-hole" carries the same authentic cache. There are many cars in museums that are restored or otherwise not "original," so the precedent is there for fixing them up. The PPG pace car, as beautiful as it was, might be a candidate for not being restored as an homage to the sinkhole event. That car is significant only as a styling exercise, and that ship has sailed.
