I've just replaced a cracked radiator but the coolent temp still rises above 227 and the fans will not go on. If at that point I turn on the A/C I can hear the fan kick in and the temp will quickly come down to 194/196. There are no more leaks in the system ( new radiator ), I've tried switching the relays under the hood to see if one is bad but it made no difference ( switched coolinf fan 1 and 2 since they are both identical ). The car runs fine with the A/C on but I'm afraid of how high the temp will go without it, It should run same temp with it on or of? I also checked for codes and have none! Any Ideas, I need help.
Thanks in advance:w .

So you are teling me I was premature by about one deg. with my panick. :bash I'll never get used to how hot these engines are runing. I'm going to test it once for all, with the A/C off I'm going to let it idle :mad ( not looking at the temp. ) till the fans turn on or it seazez or something ealse drastic will hapen.
C4C5 one more question please, Since the thermostat opens around 195 can the fans be reprogramed to kick in at a lower temp., lets say around 205. Would this afect something ealse like the emisions or not. I think emisions must have been the driving force behind building such a hot runing engine, I cant see it being beneficial for enything ealse. Thank you for the response:w .

Well, I let it cook for a while and would you know at 228 fan kiked on and brought the temp down to 214. I let it go for about 1 hour and it cycled betwean 228 and 214:Twist . With the A/C on the fan stays on and the temp goes down to 194 at which time the termostat takes over and it will not alowe it to go down any further. I just will have to learn and accept the fact that this is normal operating temperature. They are wright when they say it's hard to teach old dog new trick.
Happy 4th :pat :pat :pat

Hi there,
These engines are validated under many differing conditions and 228 on, 215 off is really just fine.
They reliably test these engines as they are in your car. Reliability is always a paramount concern to engineering and I have many c5s well over 100,000 miles with NO headgasket or durability problems.
Its all good and I am NOT sure if emissions is a part of it, but only engineering would know that.
Allthebest, c4c5

I do not know about this, but

For myself this was some nice to know and informative information.

Have a good'n and if'n you can't, (yes can't) paint it purple! ;) :D

c4c5spec.
thanks for the good info on the LS1. I am also a new owner and even after reading the manual am/was still concerned about the high coolant and oil temps. It must be something with emissions as it seems many of the performance mods aim at lowering intake air temp and coolant temp.

Thanks again
Dave

sailronin-
I think a lot of the desire to lower intake temps has to do with the belief that there is more power available with a lower intake temperature. Cooler air is more dense, and contains more oxygen per unit volume. Whether any things like throttle body bypass, etc really make any appreciable difference is a matter of opinion. I am skeptical. If you already knew all this, forgive the ramble. :)
