Need help!! info on changing 12" brakes to J55 13"

1.Where can I get the best deals on the neccesary (brake adapters?) $185 at DRM seems excesive.

2. Will I still need the (wheel adapters) for the rear 9.5x17" sawblades on my 86?

My car is an 86 coupe. It's got the 12" brakes. A local forum member has a complete set of j55's at a good price and I don't got alotta bank. My car has a stranglehold on my wallet, so I'm trying to make decent upgrades and repairs at the best prices I can. I've got set of 95 or 96 sawblades that there seems to be a general consensus need adapters on my current setup. Some disagree, but I have them anyway. Not on the car yet. I thought that mybe the updated j55's might account for the offset difference of the rear wheels.

(edit) BTW, the mounting brackets come with the setup I'm looking at purchasing, but you need (spacers, brackets, or some kind of adapter hardware) What I think I'm looking for is a cheaper conversion kit (looks pretty simple for the price) and the offset info.

I don't know if this will help but my friend has a '90 that he put the '96 5-stars on it, and he did not need an adapter.

Brake upgrade

Hi moonunit451,I just upgraded my 96 13"brakes to z06 and have a extra complete set-up including calipers, adaptors, rotors, cages,and pads /all hardware brand new.If it is anything your interested in.I am using 5 spoke wheels. bob.

Hey 451-----Here is the scoop.

From 84-87 the Vette had a specific wheel offset. From 88-96 they had a different offset.

That means that regardless of the brakes or rotors you are using, if you upgrade your wheels to the 88-96 style, you will need adapters.

I did the 13" conversion on my 90 using VB&P rotors, the stock calipers, braided lines, and they are soooooo nice! However, your wheel offset on the 86 makes it a different animal.

Talk to Vette Brakes before you get too deep. They sell adapters to get you in business.

The really good news is you can run full ZR1 wheels in the rear of your car with no adapters and they will just squeeze up in the fender. If you had a 88-96 and put ZR1 rear wheels on it, they would stick out and look stupid.

I went on a steep learning curve here, cause I didn't want to tie up a members parts if they weren't going to work for me. You know, always tyring to save a buck and make my baby nicer, I frequently get ahead of myself, but I'm sure learning a lot!
