1993 Convertible 1999 FRC Pewter sold
My Corvette is a 1986 with Automatic Transmission,Z-51 option, late '86 with Aluminum Heads, all stock.
My Starter needs to be replaced and I am in the process of getting a new one. I want one of the Mini High Torque versions as opposed to the stock model.
The problem is I have to Mail Order and I am not sure of which model is needed.
Does anybody know if my car came with the 153 teeth or 168 teeth Flywheel? Is there a difference with which starter is used or are they interchangeable.
According to Auto Zone stock starter is the same for all '86 Vettes with Auto.
According to the Mini Supplier it calls for the 153 teeth version not stock mini replacement for Chevy 350 version.
I have found conflicting reports in the Search mode.
Does anybody have experience with this. I don't want to order, pull out the old one, then have to send back the incorrect one disabling my car for weeks if I can help it.
thanks,Barrier

Try Jegs they have a sale this month on high torque starters.$138.00 I bought one for my 86.

I am very happy with these guys' mini starter, at a lower cost than many. It's in my 406ed Vette, replacing a failed Chevy (Hitachi?), geared, mini-starter. Besides being friendly, helpful and available, they know their stuff.

One of their starters has solved long-standing issues with the military's Hummers, plus they can expound many other successes. They are also my heroes, having refused to sell out to the Japanese, who made them a generous offer.

Jack or Chris, there, WILL know the tooth answer, too. The link provides a toll-free number to them.

Thanks for the responses.
If I understand this correctly if there are double mounting holes the starters may be used for both 153 and 168 teeth flywheels.
I still don't understand why the supplier I originally spoke with would have 153 teeth starter as the one for a '86 Vette??
I suppose I'm going to have to remove the old starter first and match it with a new one to determine whether the starter he is selling will work.
The specs on the new one says 11 tooth PG260M which replaces stock 9 tooth 10MT model.

I checked the starter I have it is a 10MT with 9 teeth. Does this mean an 11 tooth mini high torque will work? More teeth quicker spin?
