Why

The speed density system is good for basic engine swaps ... carbed to EFI. They are harder to actually tune because the computer doesn't actually know how much air is getting in. It has to go to pressure ... look up the table to use and then look up what the AF ratio is supposed to be. All these tables can be adjusted a little at a time till the engine is properly tuned.

A MAF system knows how much air just came in ... so it can calculate what the AF ratio is supposed to be. Quicker and more accurate. Easier to tune also. By using BLM counts, the ECM uses them like switches, so you can adjust the BLM lookups/counts.

To answer you question though I would try and get a complete wiring harness from Painless or others, probabally run around $500, then get the ECM, you could pick one up from Autozone and pay the core charge maybe $125 together. Now you have to look at brackets ect. not to mention the time to pull out the old harness and install the new one. Oops I forgot the Memcal, local GM dealership parts dept. (mine was $58, somehow I had the Vert Memcal).

Hope this helps.
