Well after 4mon. of shopping around me and my dad purchased a 01 Mil. Yel. coupe. So now its time for the performance mods. The first 2 things I looking to do is Open air filter element and cat-back exhaust. My Question is this : Your guys feeling what is the best stuff out there. I was looking into K&N cause it also comes w/ a new air bridge, and is the purchase of a smoother duct that goes to the throttle body w/ the purchase? And for exhaust were looking for a nice idle sound and good noise under accelertion, but not annoying on the Highway crusing. Iwas looking into either Corsa or Borla. Any suggestions?

Also what is the Apprx. hosepower and torque at the rear wheels on a 01 C5
with a automatic

And finally any of these mods able to "feel" a true difference. We'll probably be doing these changes before spring and that will be it until next winter

Thanks
Anthony

PS
I must say I owned a 67 nova w/ a 300hp 350 and that was fun, but this Vette takes it to a whole new level. Nothing like rolling the power window up after drive-thru at McD while laying rubber down w/ the A/C on a 12 CDS in the trunk playing through the BOSE spkers. Gotta love modern HP and technology.

Anthony, Congrats on the car! :cool

I believe you are on the right track for your initial mods.
As for intakes, there are several good aftermarket intakes, and you will find strong supporters of each. I cannot tell you that there is one best one. I see nothing wrong with the K&N.

As for exhausts, same goes there in terms of any performance and no one best exhaust. Most of them will get you 8-12hp. I think exhausts are a bit more important to carefully choose from in terms of what sounds best to you. I love the sound of my Borla XR1 through my headers and gutted cats, but I can tell you many would say its too loud, and not like the resonance. Corsas are a bit more exotic sounding, and have no resonance. B&B and others have nice exhausts. Its very subjective, I know some with B&B or others say theirs sound the best to them, but I still would put mine up against any of the others, mine sounds pretty wicked.

Regarding rwhp, for the auto it is estimated there is about 18% drivetrain loss, so I'd expect around 290. Many who do the intake and exhaust do feel the difference, maybe more so on the top end. The exhaust will certainly make it sound different.

Hope you enjoy the new vette! :beer

I went with the Blackwing filter. Real big improvement, especially for the buck, and the Corsa Indys with the X pipe. Very pleased with the sound. Not at all noisy at idle or cruise, but when you get on it , It sounds GREAT!!!

I would add headers also. Hooker or headman are both good. You should also include a new air mass flow sensor.

Anthony, there are a large number of threads that have been created previously that address your questions. Do a search or else just start reading in this forum. The C5 is a great car and offers an almost unlimited opportunity for modifications - it really is just a matter of how much money and time you want to put into it.

I agree 100%. Except to add that some sort of aftermarket intake is a must. A Blackwing and any air bridge can benefit you greatly. I've seen excellent results with most anyone else's intake on a vette.

Exhaust is another issue, a personal one at that. All aftermarket exhausts will benefit you so choose the noise level that suits you.

As for headers, I am not sure Headman or Hooker make C5 headers, but go long tubes. They're the best bang for the buck.

Want to start out slow (er, uh, FAST!)? Get a 3.73 gearset in there. That'll wake it up immediately. :beer

If your going to use the K&N filter, I would save some money and just get the replacement filter and do the Zip Tie Mod. The real gain will come from outside air. Take the money you save with that and put it on your exhaust. Borla Stingers are good, along with Corsa Indy Pros. (round tips) None will give you much gain in HP but it will sound nice.

A 3:42 rear or 3:73 rear will wake it up, thats a given. Tpis long tube headers with a nice cat back system will also.

Just my .02 worth.

Yeah, you gotta watch out for those C3 & C4 guys. What works for a SB chevy generally has little application to C5s and LS1s. The latest hot headers for C5s seem to be LGM or Kooks. Personally, I'm saving up for LGMs with hi-flow cats (emissions testing :mad )

Technically, unless your local IM240 test facility mirror tests every underbody prior to the IM240 scan test, you could get away very easily without cats (catalytic convertors).

In fact, most header manufacturers offer their systems with and without cats. In place of cats they usually have a modified pass thru tube, often called an export pipe. These can be swapped out quite easily for the cats if need be. FLP and Grizzly offers this as an option, I believe. Both are quality ceramic coated and offer an excellent fit. Check them out!
