Greetings from a C3 owner. Tonight my neighbor and I looked at an 84 for him. I'm a C3 guy, so I could use some help. The cross fire injection engine has been replaced with a nicely built 350 with carb (engine drove very well). It has a 4+3 which ran nicely, but the shifter was difficult, especially finding first gear. Is this a common problem with the 4+3? What is required to fix the shifting problem?

The digital display works, but it goes dim every now and then. Could be as simple as a ground wire or other connection, but anyone know if this is a sign of a more serious problem? As I understand it, the digital display cluster often fails.

The weather stripping is showing signs of being 20 years old. What is the cost to replace all the weather stripping...top (targa), windows and doors?

The interior looks pretty good. Has 1988 seats in excellent shape. The carpet will need to be replaced, but other than that the car is fairly clean on the inside. Also has a ZR1 cat back exhaust system and passes emissions.

The current asking price is $8,000. The rebuilt engine has about 10,000 miles and the overall mileage is around 120,000. I think the owner may take between $6,500 and $7,000. How does this sound for an 84 as described above?

Hi Jim,

Only question I can answer is about the weather strip. The weather strip is a pretty expensive item, it runs in the $800-900 neighborhood from what I've seen in the catalogs. That is just for the weather strip and doesn't count installation, which you may or may not be doing yourself. If you're not doing it yourself, add on labor.

If that tranny has 120,000 on it; I would have someone check that out. It ran 110,000 with the orignal motor and 10,000 with the current motor. What specs were the motor rebuilt to? Is the shop that rebuilt the motor reputable? What parts did they use? If they rebuilt the motor with more power, that was more strain on the stock transmission (assuming that it's the stock transmission).

I would pass on this car for that price. For $8000.00 you can get a good 88/89 model with lower miles. Also , the 4+ 3 has been problematic and expensive to fix. It is another reason to avoid that particular car if there is any question as to the condition of the tranny

I think the price is a bit high. last spring I could have gotten a 1985 with the 4+3 wotj 90k , in very nice shape, well maintained for $7500. I ended up buying a 1990 convert with 69k ,with a 6 speed , new top and clutch for $10,000.

$8k?...the guy's dreaming. PASS for more than half that.

The 4+3 can be okay, depending upon maintenance and driving habits.

The dash may be a ground issue, but could be a R&R; rather easy job, tho.. I paid $250 exchange many years ago.

My weatherstripping was $2k w/o the rear window.
