Hi guy's

I'm rebuilding my '78 vette's L-48 and I need some answers while I proceed.
Do all the stock small block 350 ci have an internally balanced crank?
If so do I need the internally balanced harmonic damper?

Last question;
My new timing gear has three positions and has a + and a - Is this for the advance settings? Or should I use the neutral position?

Thanks,

Ryan

Yes.... Small Block 350's are internally balanced. Check the manual for the timing gear.

Yes all the engines have internally balanced cranks, and NO you can not remove the harmonic damper. If you have a manual gearbox it will propably work without the dampner, if you rebalance your crank. If you have an auto trans, your crank will crack.

Your timing gear has three positions + (advanced), zero, and - (retarded). In general the advanced position will give more top end power, retarded position more low end torque, compared to zero position which is the factory setting.

Anyway if your engine is a stock L-48, it is space enought for the valves to do some experiments. However if you have increased your comp ratio, or useing a high lift cam, be careful, it is always a chance that the valves hit the pistons.

You've got it reversed. Advancing the cam will give more low end, & retarding the cam will give more top end. :)

:BOW Sorry for the late reply.
Scooter76 you are of course absolutely right about that.
Advance will give more low to mid-range torque, and you will at the same time lose top-end power. The factor that influence most is the intake closing point , which has influence on the compression pressure. Earlier closing gives more pressure, and hence more torque.
