Need suggestions

Item 1.
I was driving Sunday and after 40 some miles pulled in to fill the tank and the Emergency Brake (dash) light came on. I never even touched the brake handle.
Any suggestions?
Item 2.
When I had the carpeting replaced I also had the trim guy replace the material on the luggage are tonneau, but during the work the recoil spring snapped. No the window-shade type retraction won't.
Any suggestions?

The brake light will also come on when the system is low on brake fluid. You may want to check your master cylinder to see if the front and back reservoirs are full. If not you have a leak somewhere. Hope this helps.

Did the light stay on, or only come on when you stepped on the brakes, then turn off? In addition to being activated by the parking brake, it's also actuated by a pressure differential between the front and rear brake systems, which indicates air or a leak in one system.
