Can someone direct me to a site that may explain how to remove/reinstall the battery in my 84? I have a chilton book, but it is a bit vague.

Thanks everyone.

It's fairly simple to do. Measure the gap between the door and the side gill panel and write it down or remember it. Remove the 5 screws that hold the gill panel to the rear portion of the wheelwell panel. Remove the single bolt that holds the upper rear portion of the gill panel to the body bracket. Look in the gap between the bottom center of the gill panel and the rocker panel. You will see a bolt head. Use a open-end wrench to loosen this bolt. The gill panel can be removed and set aside. Remove the negative and positive battery cables and move them out of the way. Remove the battery retaining bracket bolt on the firewall side of the battery and pull the battery out of the tray. Install the battery hook it up and start the engine and make sure everything is OK.

Re-install the gill panel and make sure the gap between the panel and the door is adequate to allow the door to open without touching the panel

Thanks, C4Cruiser...I'l giver a go.

IMHO, this, along with the air filter housing unit, are the biggest PITA procedures for my car! :L It took me an hour to get the darn thing out! ;)

Thanks Jonm.
That's what I was looking for.

What I have done, is unbolt the cruise control(I think thats what it is) over the battery and went in that way. Kind of got to go in at an angle.

It is the cruise control and I have done it that way, as well. Don't lose the small rubbers that fit the mounting screws.

I have also removed the brace, for added clearance, which seemed to be less trouble than taking off the 'gill'.

My search showed that the new Delcos were the best batteries, so I did not have to redo this in a couple of years. Cheaper batteries (Sears) usually delivered 2-3 years of service, not the 5-7 I have gotten from a Delco.

Thanks WhalePirot......WhalePirot....I thought BigStubby was bad. Just kidding.
Thanks again for the info.

Yeah, well I just THINK i am bad.

The 'Whale' is our nickname for the 747. 'Pirot' is how Japanese say my job.

YW :w

WHALEPIROT: Glad to hear you had a good experience with the Delco battery. My first was fine but when I replaced it after 6 or 7 years with another I developed a mysterious internal short after about 2 years. Couldn't be the new battery so we looked everywhere else. Long story - short; problem went away when we finally swapped out the DELCO battery. A word to the wise.
