not sure what else to call it, but when working on C1 parts in my vise, I end up putting towels or rags in there to keep the parts from getting bitten by the jaws of the vise. Does anyone know where I can get some overlays or guards that would enable me to clamp down with the vise but not put marks into the part itself? I have seen these made of brass or steel.....anyone?

I'm sure they make something Herb but in the meantime how about a piece of wood on either side of the part you need to clamp in the vise? Wood won't leave any marks.
I've used towels before and the teeth marks still have come thru the towel

Most of the auto suppliers have the soft inserts that fit on the jaws.

In a pinch, you can take a leather belt ( preferably 100% and not the vinyl crap ) and cut a few strips slightly longer then the width of the jaws. Then you can use them between the jaws to tighten anything at all in the vise, without any damage what so ever to the part.

Sounds lame, but believe me it works.

I have a couple set that are made of aluminum and have a magnetic strip to hold them to the jaws of the vise. They also have rubber on the side that you clamp to the part. You should be able to get them at a good parts store.

That's what I have too. I've had 'em so long, the magnets have delaminated from the aluminum. One of these days, I'll epoxy 'em back in place.

I have also used wood, but find every time that I really need a third hand or a few extra fingers......

Here's the Eastwood ones.
thanks Tom, those are also good looking ones....depending on what shows up in the mail from the ones I already ordered, perhaps I will supplement those with one or two of these as well......a guy can never have too many tools!!!!

I have several lengths of the extruded aluminum jaws with rubber pads and magnets like Ray described, plus a thick aluminum set with hex shapes cast in for working with Aeroquip AN fittings; also have a set made from urethane with magnets on the back (which I can't locate at the moment). :eyerole
