Thought I'd share this news with a group who will appriciate it.

Just found out this weekend that one of my neighbors has a custom vette. We've been in neighbors for 4 years, never knew he had one. He had it stored in the garage for 5 years and after seeing mine he decided he would get the old girl out and dust her off. I saw it parked in front of his house today and had to ring the bell and see what's up. Well he is the second owner and has had it since '75. It's a '70 model with the 350 hp small block and a 4 speed. That he had had it since '75 through me at first since at first glance it looks like a custom '78 model. The hood/front clip is a one piece unit with fixed rectangular headlamps and plexiglass covers. Then the side vents are the '73 - '78 style. It looks like it has the fastback window but on closer inspection it is a set of louvers made to that shape. It does have the kamm-style tail and at one time sported steel bumpers. Although the interior had me fooled too, it has been completley redone with a '78 dash, gauges, console, steering wheel and seats. The rear fenders have been flaired and it sports American Racing wheels that look like the turbofan design. It also has chrome side pipes now and he said it had factory sides so he did not have to get a new rear cover to eliminate the factory exaust ports.

I talked quite a while with him and we toured each others vette. He is still running the 11:1 pistons and he had a new Demon carb on it this week since it had been stored so long. It took a little to fire it up (no choke) but he got her running for me.. man those side pipes sound great. He said he wishes he had all the stock interior to convert it back, but it is long gone.

I'm glad that he got her back on the road, and it was seeing mine that helped.

I'll see if he'll let me take some pictures to post.. or better yet get him to join the CAC.

Nice that he got motivated to bring it out of deep sleep :) . If it had original factory-installed sidepipes, it has to have started life as a '69 - that's the only year they were available from the factory.

I would really like to see some pics of this hidden treasure.

Doh.. :duh your right JohnZ, maybe one of these daze I'll remember that factory sides were only on '69 model C3's. I'll have to ask if they were dealer installed.

Andy - I'm still working on pictures, want permission, but we seem to be on oposite schedules.

P.S. Speaking of mods, did you see the article in Corvette Enthuisiast (Dec 2005 issue) on the C3 verticle door conversion?
