I bought a '66 mosport roadster last week, I should be picking it up later this week. I have lots of questions. I am a corvette owner for the last 6 years or so, but they have always been C3's. My last was a '71 LT-1. First, the car that I purchased ran great, but it dieseled when it was shut off. The past owner, who does not drive it very much runs medium octane gas. I would assume a higher grade gas would be more appropriate? Also, what is the appropriate idle RPM for the 327/350 engine?

Again congrats on the car.I dont know how mecanical you are but I would go thru the entire car with a standard tune up.

I am running sunoco ultra 94 in my 66 427/425 car with NO problems I have the timeing retarded a bit so it runs with no ping under hard axcelleration tune it and set the timing with the total advance method John Z wrote an excellent article on it in this mag

http://www.corvetteenthusiast.com/ There is a link to it on the front page of the forum We support our supporting vendors so if you order it I would suggest ordering it there.

Good luck and have fun.

Make sure you get under the car and do a saftey check on your brakes, steering, how the wheels are on.When I first get a car I always go thru everything and anything that could make the car dangerous NO MATTER WHO OR WHEN IT WAS WORKED ON PRIOR TO ME OWNING IT.

The indicated idle speed in neutral for the 327/350 is listed at 700rpm's. The specs for the motor also recommends the fuel should be "premium", so use a 92-94 octane gas.

How does the L79 rate against the LT1? Funny thing is that I was considering selling mine for a 71 LT1!

MC: I have only driven the L79 twice. Two different cars. My
LT-1 blew the doors off the first one. The second one ran about as well. Thats the one I bought. My LT-1 had a 4.11 rear so I found it a little quicker out of first, but actually the L-79 with the 3.36 rear cruised a lot nicer. Too bad we didn't run into each other earlier. I was looking to trade as well.

Although the "book" spec for idle speed on an L-79 is 700 rpm, that's a stretch; most L-79's are a lot happier and more stable at 800-850.

Thanks, everyone for the welcome. I am looking forward to being a midyear owner. I got it trailered here this weekend. Due to the weather, I've barely 'gotten it out of the box'.
