Ok guys and Gals,

I have one for you.. I'm currently looking for a better cam to put in my car. What I have now is a mild cam along with a set of ported heads. 557 lift, 221/221 at 116. I'm looking for something that will give a little more top end.

Any ideas???

I have done a lot of research on this and spoken to several tuners before I chose our new cam. The "proper" cam really depends on what you want to use the car for. All the aftermarket cams will give you an increase in HP, but some are much more streetable than others. If you are going for all out drag performance and are willing to sacrifice some streetability, then get a high lift reverse-split duration cam, like one manufactured by Thunder Racing. There have been some that have been able to get 430 rwhp with this cam and STOCK heads.

Now, if you want something with more oompf, but still remain streetable, then a cam similar to what you describe will fit the bill just fine. You won't get to 400 rwhp with it, but you will still have excellent streetability.

FWIW, I finally chose a 230/230 .581/.581 on 114 LSA for ours. With this cam and ported heads, with other bolt-ons (exhaust, intake) and tuning, our car will make 400 rwhp. However, our torque curve will still be nice down low, where you need it on the street and for auto-xing.

Good luck!!

John & Donna,

Thanks for the info, i'm not too worried about a rough idle, part of the game I quess.. I'm just trying to find out which type of Cam would give me more topend pull.

Thanks again for the numbers..

Yeah, Thunder Racing tends to be VERY popular among LS1s. Motorsport Tech (MTI http://www.motorsporttech.com) seem to be the two most used ppl. MTI has a boat load of heads/cam/nitrous C5s that're insane. Probably the fastest is SWs 422 CID C5. Pulls low 9s last i checked. But MTI has some cams that basically keep the stock driveability of the car, just boost the power, as well as Thunder Racing. IMO, go w/ a TR 227 or 230 cam. Both are pretty sweet, and w/ the ported heads, they'll make some mean power #s

Thanks for the info, I looked at the numbers not bad.. I was thinking about the Pro Charger, but I think that's out of the question now.

I think with a good CAM and some tuning It should make some good power..

Thanks to all..

Ernie
