New Dipstick won't go all the way in?

We just bought a 2001 conv, and on the way home the check eng light came on. The dealership said they just had the oil changed, so we were worried they didn't replace something correctly. When we went to check the oil we found that the dipstick was broke off 1 inch down.

We can't see that the other piece is still in the tube with a flashlight, but we just got the new dipstick from our local Chevy dealership, and it won't go all the way in-

Is this normal, could the other part be in there somewhere blocking the new one? Could there be another reason the dipstick is a might too long (just a tad), like the wrong part because of a different engine in the convertible as opposed to hard top/targa models? If the bottom part of the old one is in there - how could we get the booger out?

Any advice is appreciated, we are afraid to take it anywhere- not knowing how much oil's in it- thanks guys!

No expert here, but if you bought from a dealer, I would take it back and let them fix it.

Wish I could, bought as is 246 miles away :(

We are on our own, so to speak- and have decided that the old on is still stuck in there- now how to get it out- most likely taking it to someone to take apart the tube, and remove the old dipstick and put it all back together- joy.

Thank you!!

First off the engines are the same (convertible vs coupe), second if the oil pressure gage is registering pressure you have oil in the system and it should be fine to drive. The biggest concern to me would be what is floating in my oil pan and what potential damage can it cause, finding out could be expensive. There is lot of labor involved in removing the oil pan.

Did a quick search on dipstick and there seams to be a difference between 97/00 and 01/04, Did not get a part No. but there is a $8.00 difference in price. Check if the dipstick is the proper one for your year?
