LOUDON, N.H. – Juan Pablo Montoya has qualified for his first Chase for the Sprint Cup and now has qualified for the pole for the first of the 10 races that will decide the championship.
How do you think he’s feeling?
“I’m loving it. It’s kind of nice having like zero pressure right now,” Montoya said Friday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. “It’s cool.”
Montoya set a track record with a lap at 133.431 mph, which knocked Denny Hamlin out of the top starting position in Sunday’s Sylvania 300. Ryan Newman set the previous record (133.357 mph) in 2003.
If he isn’t feeling pressure now, Montoya might by the time the race starts, with four other drivers in the Chase starting right behind him.
Tony Stewart starts second, Kurt Busch third, Hamlin fourth and Carl Edwards fifth. Mark Martin, who starts the Chase as the No. 1 seed, will line up 14th.
