Hi all, am getting a bit of work done to my vette thanks to a $$ windfall. I have found little in the way of stereos to fit the dash without cutting it up. I guess my choices are....custom auto sound or...custom autosound. are these reliable? do they sound ok?
I dont have a radio right now, its fine mst of the time to listen to the engine, but every now and then i could use a little music.
any help would be appreciated
thanks mike

I installed a Kenwood unit like this

in one of my 73's. Great radio. Most vendors sell them. Here is a link to ZIP, http://store.yahoo.com/zipproducts/58ken600ser.html

hi tom, looks nice! ive seen these offered alongside the custom autosound units, the only thing that steered me away so far is that I like the idea of a cd-changer, have you heard of any one using a changer with the kenwood?
thanks mike

I just put a Custom Autosound USA-6 and changer in my '79. So far I love it. It's hard to say what it would sound like in your car though. I'm running it through a new 4 channel Kenwood amp to new Pioneer speakers. Could have a little more bass but I think that's mostly due to speaker selection. It seemed like the speakers that had the best clarity generally had the least bass, so I went with them figuring I can always add a sub if I need to.

I looked at the usa-6 , and it seems the way to go for a radio with changer, how about those press fi speaker kits that slide in the back underneath the rear window? does any one have experience with them?
thanks mike

Hey, i have just purchased one of those pressure fit speaker systems... it sounds really nice.. The only bad thing you have to modify/cut the center foam thingy to make it fit.. i found the exact same speaker system at JCWhitney and its made for a Jeep Wrangler to go overhead.. but i think its a great deal. i have seen different models of the custom autosound's SOUNDBAR but they only advertise the one. Not sure what to tell ya. The one at the vette shop near my house has 2 mid ranges and 2 tweeters. The one i got from ecklers has 2 mid range, 2 bass reflex, and 2 tweeters. Hope that helps! I have the USA-5 headunit and the 6 disc cd changer and its pretty nice.. the cd changer doesnt fit in the compartments behind the seats which kinda sucks tho...

Kenwood makes a CD Changer for that radio. Here is a link: http://store.yahoo.com/zipproducts/xr-320.html and the CD Changer

Plus the radio should be able to most anyother brand. Only problem is, where to put it?

What I like about the Kenwood radio is its black face. Looks much better then the others chrome face.

Woobie,

I installed a panasonic post mount am/fm cassette player(found it in a little store, had only one, orignally sold in 1982 and they still had one left!) I also installed a 10 disk cd changer. "where to put it" consumed an entire afternoon, after much searching, and trying different places, I removed the "tub" that was over my spare tire jack, removed the spare tire jack (like I will ever change the tire on the side of the road after I spent 2 hours removing the spare tire once to search for a decal I was told was there) and the cd changer fit nicely upright and diagonally in the groove where the jack was. The mounting brackets required me to drill four small holes that can easily be covered up later. It works great there, I can reach it from the driver's seat if I need to however most cd changers come with remote controls. I kept the "tub" thing and the jack in my garage and will replace them if I ever decide to show my car in a judged show. I am searching for an orginal radio/8 track player for my car, I did find and purchased an orginal am/fm/cb that came out of a 78. After I attempted to install it, I found out that my car didn't have the cb option, so I am still searching. If anyone out there wants a am/fm/cb radio that fits a 78' email me!
Good luck in your quest for some tunes!

well, since the topic has sidetracked I might as well keep it going... where can I install my cd changer in a 76? My jack is behind the drivers seat (actually my jack is gone.. who knows where it is) and I really want to put it back there! I thought I tried all of those compartments but not sure if I could do it diagonally.. im sure someone has done it! where is the best spot.. I saw that you could buy different compartment thingys (with the 3 different compartments) but I was wondering if there are any custom compartment assemblies/thingys... has anyone mounted to the top of the compartment area in the back?

well, thanks for the input all! i believe i will try the custom autosound usa-6 with the changer and the press fit
speakers. ill let you guys know when its done
thanks mike
