Daytona Beach, FL. – NASCAR has run one race – and it wasn't even an official one – and already appears ready to make 2010's first rule change.

NASCAR officials confirmed Wednesday they are strongly considering altering the green-white-checkered rule before Thursday's two 150-mile qualifying races. The events set the rest of the lineup for the season-opening Daytona 500.

Sunday's qualifying at Daytona International Speedway set only the front row.

Currently, if a caution comes out prior to the race leader taking the white flag, one green-white-checkered finish is attempted. That entails a lap under green, the white flap and the checkered flag.

What's being considered: Any time the caution is displayed prior to the white flag lap (not just once), NASCAR would utilize the green-white-checkered rule. In theory, races could be extended by several laps.

Before the rule changed in 2004, making the procedure the same for all three national series, it took four green-white-checkered tries to finish a Truck race at St. Louis.

"They could do 10 green-white-checkereds and we're still not going to make it to the checkered," said driver Jeff Gordon.

"All you're going to do is set yourself up for another wreck. You give us two laps there under green and we're going to find a way to wreck."

Kevin Harvick's win Saturday night in the non-points Shootout came under the green-white-checkered rules. The non-points race a year ago also ended that way, prompting fan complaints.
