89x2,
Well the weather was amazing. The airline announced the local temperature of 44 degrees and I thought "Crap, I'm gonna freeze my butt off" but the mile high altitude and bright sunshine cured all that. The goosebumps I had were NOT from the chill in the air.
I looked over the car for almost an hour, top to bottom, interior, underneath and engine compartment. The only thing was a stone hit on the left driving light lense had made an impact mark and cracked it very slightly. You had to be right down on the ground and staring at the lense to see it.
Next, the owner fired it up. He told me he was very particular about starting it, letting the starter motor crank and then shutting off the key before the engine fired. He indicated that he does this to make sure oil is in the turbos. After he started it, he let it sit and warm up.
Now it was time for the test drive. The owner started out first, pulling onto a fairly large highway and punched it , smoothly shifting into second, then third and then fourth. Can you say torque? Oh Yeah. This was as fast as my "other" dream car that I once owned, a 1968 Mustang that has a 428 cubic inch CobraJet engine. (Ok, Ok I couldn't afford a Vette or the insurance on a Vette at the time, so don't think badly of me because I owned a Mudstain twenty-five years ago...).
Now it was my turn to get behind the wheel. Getting in was a bit different than my C5, but manageable. I get used to the shifter and gear arrangements and then pull back out. We hit the same highway, but this time going back the opposite way. Not being familiar with the roads, the owner says "You are going to loose the right two lanes just ahead". The bad news was there was no immediate opening in the remaining left lane, except about 1/8 of a mile ahead. Downshifted to third and stabbed the pedal. Holy crap Batman, this thing went from 50 to 90 in about 3 seconds. Cool.
Went back to the house and let the owner pull it back into the driveway (very high curb and no "lowering" at the driveway entrance). Went in and discussed numbers and came to a meeting of the minds.
Paperwork was next and that was wrapped up with a deposit. #53 has a new home.
Now, all I have to do is get it from Denver to Detroit........ oh, and send along the rest of the money.
Way cool car. The color almost matches the '68 CobraJet from years past. Now I understand why you all rave about yours.....
Entertaining suggestions for an enclosed car carrier to get the car home. Anybody here recommend a company that they have used? I think that question might get more attention if I start a separate thread.
Oh, yes, it was a very cool weekend....... Now the waiting begins!!
