Picked up a 74 coupe...it has a holly carb an hei dist and an edelbrock manifold..previous owner really messed it up 350/250 auto. I have a stock distrib and a stock carb...would like to use a 350 manifold, i have no. 3827184 gm, but dont know if it will work. Anyone help out??

FX, if you do change carb let meknow which holley you have . i am looking for a 750 cfm carb. maybe we can work out a deal.
btw. i have similar mods on my 74 also. did the previous owner take the time to change the tach to work with the hei distributor?

best to you

I have a holley 1850-5 1108, not sure if thats the right number, have to take it off to see if any numbers down low where I cant presently see them. I've only had the vette for two weeks and just basically trying to fid out what the previous owner was trying to do. The set up on it now, won't work. Newer hei, no tach provision . Lots of work to do.

Let me know on the carb...

Welcome to the club.

Hey Terry, welcome to the CAC. I have the original manifold for my '74 coupe (340281). Email me if you wish to purchase. Also original Qjet carb. You are going to love this forum. The people here will help you do absolutley anything you wish to do to your shark. peace Bud :cool

TERRY, the #1850 is correct, that makes it a 600cfm carb. that's what i have right now. as i said i am trying to go up to a 750.want to see if there are any benefits.to going with a bigger cfm carb.
thanks for looking.i hope we can help you with any of your needs of questions.

Hello,

Thanks to all for welcoming me here...its going to be a great ride.

YES,it's allways a great ride.corvette, harley FLH ,or superglide

WAKE UP!!!!the intake , carb, and distributor change was to make it BETTER!!
stock ignition is good for 4500 rpm, hei goes to 6000. the intake if a performer is near stock, if it's a performer rpm , you have a great dual plane intake that many people are switching to cause it adds lots of low end grunt. the holley carb, 600. is perfect for that motor. the quadrabog , with those huge secondaries will bog when you tramp it down, the holley, if set up right, will cause no delay.
sounds to me like your on the path to 300 h.p. , a far trip from 205, and you want to go back.??
here's what's next, a good high lift cam, about 460 lift,240 duration, some headers, full duals with turbo mufflers (quite open), top it off with the torque convertor reccomended by the cam people, 2000rpm? and add a nice shift kit and some 3.73 rear end gears.
finish off your setup and enjoy some real h.p. unbuild it and regret it.
notice how everyone (include me)want your old parts???do the math. save the old parts for if you want to sell it as original, but h.p. is something that lacked in those cars(mines a 75 even worse 165hp.).If you find a problem with power as it is , maybe the carb was never set up properly, the power valve must be changed with the cam to keep peak power, also, you should have the distributor recurved, if you have no power, it's set up wrong, that thing should move well as is.mike

What Can I say? I'm an old harley rider who can barely get his leg over the saddle, let alone step on the gas. Just lookin for comfort...speed's, for you young guys. Have a great day

Wake up yourself!:L

If you can't get stock points to go to at least 6K, and don't know the two minute basic adjustment technique to remove the bogging from a Qjet, best not be giving technical advice! I have the stock carb, manifold, and distributor on mine and make way over 300 Hp and easily turn 6k without a miss. Once, again the GM engineers were not idiots. :beer

vettehead,to spin at 6000 rpm yes they can, to provide an uninterrupted, good voltage spark at 6000 rpm,not likely.that's why the non idiots at g.m. came up with the h.e.i.
quadrajet?? you can completely eliminate the bog in a quad in two minutes, you are amazing, cause g.m. told me in 79 i had to live with it in my new van because they sacrificed the bog for fuel economy.(i had to live with it.)
if you read the thread the man has these parts,he does not have a quad or stock intake or the distributor. and like i said , if it's not better than stock, there's something out of tune.
as for my giving bad technical advice, anyone who would tell someone to go out and get the old stock parts, and replace the performance parts he already has with the old stuff is NOT giving good technical advice.
Before spouting about me giving bad advice, read my posts.
you are right about the quadrajet being easy to tune, but you don't see many in quarter mile cars.mike

Keep your shirt on, Mike. The guy DOES have some of the stock stuff and wants to unBubba his car by returning it to stock. That's his choice, cause it's his car. Your "wake up" post infers that there is something inherently wrong with both the stock carb and stock ignition. There isn't, for the reasons previously mentioned.

GM did not incoporate HEI to allow engines to spin to a higher RPM, it was done (as stated many times on this board and others by the people who were there at the time) as part of overall emissions reduction strategy. An important advantage of HEI is that it does not go 'out of tune' due to wear of the breaker points which in turn affects dwell angle and ignition timing resulting in increased emissions.

There's plenty of info available on how to adjust the air door on Qjet secondaries to eliminate the bog. I took me a grand total of two minutes to get it right on mine and I haven't need to touch it since. I've never heard of a case of 'having to live with it'.

The poster just wanted know if a particular PN of manifold would work or not, not be told how to configure his own car. :upthumbs

Hello and welcome, this is a good ride even if only for a little bit at a time(unfortunately work get's in the way) keep krusin MJ
