After watching the Barret Jackson Auction (much to my wife's dismay) last week-end, I realized that Craig Jackson has shown us the best possible way to sell a midyear (or any used car for that matter).

Over the years, I've sold a few of my own cars and I just realized I was doing it wrong.
I would schedule people to come to see the car about an hour apart.

Clearly not the most productive way.

The next time I try to sell my own car, I will wait til I have a few interested buyers and then have two or three of them come to see the car at the same time.
This will:
1) Incent competition
2) Bring out that "I can do better than you attitude".
3) Free up my time so that I don't spend hours waiting for different prospects.
4) If all goes well, I should have at least two people visibly competing for my car.
Even if they don't decide right then and there, they will "see" who they're competing with.
5) Hopefully get the best $$ for my car.

Your Thoughts,
Pedro

You may be on to something there! A friend of mine just sold a pass. car and accidentally created a similar situation. He got top dollar because he was able to say no to a lower offer knowing there were two buyers right there competing for the car. I think it effects the buyer and the seller.

...just think how high they would go if we fed the buyers drinks and put them on TV. :)

;LOL. That's great. I like the way both of you think. Mind if I borrow the ideas for the next time I sell one of my projects? Very clever.

Yes, certainly a timesaver, and what a way to eliminate the haggling-you let them negotiate your best price. Definitely my new plan. :cool

A private auction sounds like a real interesting idea. Some folks though might not be comfortable having competition the first time they see the car. Maybe an individual preview, so they can look the car over carefully without other potential buyers looking over their shoulder, would help put them at ease.

We had an unintended multiple buyer situation happen on another car when two folks showed up at the same time even though we had scheduled them an hour apart. When the first arrival, who was about to get into negotiating the price, heard the second person say "Oh my god, what a beatuful car - I want this" he asked for a pen to sign the Bill of Sale. We couldn't have arranged anything better but it was purely by accident. :D Sometimes the best things aren't planned in advance..........

... and charged them $350 for going home without buying the car.

Don't forget to give yourself an 8% comission on top of the sale price too :L
