I just rolled over 1000 miles on an 03 black ZO6. I love the car, but I am coming out of a 478rwhp mustang so the ZO still feels like it's lacking a bit.

I would like to know some basic mods to get me started. For all the blower/turbo fans I am still at least one year out from taking that plunge...

Thanks for the info.

Welcome 03 Z06!

Welcome to Corvette Action Center.
I'm no help on the mod questions...just wanted to welcome you to CAC. I've ridden in an '02 Z06 on the Tail of the Dragon (318 curves in 11 miles) and was VERY impressed! Of course, there is a world of difference between my 25 year old vette and Tammy's Z06...

welcome...03_z06.............I'm glad you made the jump from mustang to corvette. There are many mods you can do the your beast, look around ,I read about them on this site or maybe it was on the z06vette.com........Good luck and WELCOME.

Cheapest, quick and warranty protecting fixes are air intake, headers and exhaust upgrades. Let it breath!!! Chose products that are "GM approved" such as Corsa exhaust. I have used breathless air intake, FLP headers and Corsa exhaust. Go to your local Corvette dealer and take the best Corvette tech they have to lunch. Ask him or her. If its under warranty, don't let some local do the work without verifying its effect on warranty. After warranty, you can spend 10K on the baby and do a major performance upgrade such as cam etc, turbo or super charging that will take you up to 500-600 horse.

Not having driven a mustang any time recently, I can't comment on that. I can say I test drove a stock Z06 a couple of months ago and loved it! I think the idea about the exhaust is great- letting it breath better will not only give it a nice meaty exhaust note, it'll add a few HP by itself.

Welcome to the CAC! I'm sure as far as other mods go, you'll find all the ideas you could ever contemplate and then some.

Chad,

Welcome to the Corvette Action Center. I'm going to move your thread into the Z06 Mods forum for better exposure. :)

Has anyone heard what a ZO sounds like with an X-pipe?

Yes, very mean! If you go x pipe however, change the headers for maximum effect and horsepower. Look in to FLP headers which includes cats and the x pipe. Perfect fit...no cutting or welding and you can either use the cats or a clamp on straight pipe if you prefer the ultimate mean sound and HP. You can swith back to cats anytime you want with about 15 minutes on a lift...it is that easy. Check out FLP at flp2win.com. Cost is $1,599.00 for all of it.

Yeah, there is no "jingle".....J/K....sorta.......

Anyway, to answer your fisrt question I will cut and paste something I had answered someone else on another board.....it is lengthy but should cover all the bases outside of F/I or Nitrous.

The ZO6 comes with all the "bolt ons" from the factory. All I am trying to say is that the intake side of things flows pretty well and the exhaust side of things flows pretty well. With that said, the intake(airbox) question has absolutely been beat to death. Vararam and the Zip tie mod(removing the lid off of the stock airbox) seem to yield the most on the dyno(10-15rwhp). The others not so much. All of the small bolton stuff(pulley, throttle body, etc.) will still help a little but some believe if you are gonna go to that trouble and expense to compile a long list of things that yield 5rwhp(or less), you may as well slap a cam in there and be done with it. Headers are the single best bolt on and usually will add about 20-25rwhp and maybe a smidge more with tuning. There are a few people on the other forums that have reached 400rwhp with boltons but their list is extensive and had me believing there is a cheaper and more efficient way of getting there(cam). A cam/headers/intake ZO6 should be around 400-425rwhp depending on the cam you choose. Add heads(fairly expensive) and you are in the 440-460rwhp range. Keep an eye on AlexWS6's thread that he just posted. He scored 389rwhp with headers/bolt ons/ tuning. He is pushing for that elusive 400rwhp without getting into the "oily" parts. Also, LS1speed is trying to do everything but a cam to gain power while retaining the stock idle. They have heads with no cam. Not the most efficient use of money but the effort is a good one if the cash doesn't bother you...they also own the shop. That then leads us to exhaust. Again, the stock Ti flows pretty damn well. Many of the systems that have shown a gain on regular C5s don't show much gain on the ZO6. Probably the only one I have seen gain in the 7-10rwhp range is Borla Stingers(I think the same could be said for the GHL). Most people change their exhaust on these cars for a different sound. As popular as the Stingers are, I don't like the noise they make....way too smooth. They almost sound like a Hollywood recording....just too "perfect" for me. I like more edge. The B&B PRTs have that edge but no power gain so I have a hard time justifying that expense and weight gain. I'm gonna stay with the stock Ti for now.

In summary, a full bolt on ZO6 will generally yield 390rwhp at the most. The heads and cam combinations are posted above.

The Donaldson Blackwing is just a filter that takes the place of the stock airbox. These generally add a decent amount of power to a stock C5 but since the ZO6 box breathes fairly well, it hasn't shown too much improvement on the dyno. It is probably the most popular filter on the C5 and that just transferred over to the ZO6. J-rod has a before and after for the Zip tie mod and he gained about 15rwhp. There are others that will argue they didn't gain much. I think some of J-rods gain was just the way he broke his car in....he drove it harder than most. Vararam has shown some gain on the Dyno as well. I'll shut up now. I hope this helps. I will be going the headers and cam route.

Disclaimer: Please realize that the information was gained from just my observations of other car owners. There is also some opinion mixed in there......your mileage may vary.

Hope that helps.....

Vararam System for a ZO6

Does anyone know if the Vararam system for a ZO6 is really up to what the company says it will do? I'm looking to put a few mods on a 2002 to increase it's performance with not a lot of expense. Also had a recent problem with my fuel gauge..........driving along and gauge quits working and check gauge light come on, showed no fuel in Vette. Stopped got gas and gauge worked?..............

Vararam will add about 10-15rwhp on a ZO6. I have seen this personally on the dyno. The gas gauge on these things have always been fickle. Itis right up there with the column lock issue as far as little nuances of the C5. GM just fails to admit that it is not a great system. Anyway, a fairly common problem. Just monitor it.

Take a look at my mods on my 01 Z06.

I'd suggest doing 3.90 rear gears for about 1100 installed.

Great mod that puts you in the power band real quick.

I did the 3.73's because it was a complete getrag unit in a buddys basement who on his heads and cam C5 M6 went 4.10's.

4.10 's on a Z06 M12 really is more useful with drag radials. I'd say the 3.90's should be perfect for you.

Sure the intakes mods are cool..as are the headers..throttle body etc..yet the gears are a kick @ss mod.

I'm thinking a cam is also a blast at about 1500 to 2 grand installed with all the bells and whistles..(proper dual valve springs/oil pump mod/timing chain..etc) will give you around 410rwhp..380rwhp..but blows the warranty

Intake/Headers/high flow cats/ls1edit should give you about 380rwhp

Do the gears...I just did mine and its a blast. (by doing the gears you should still have warranty coverage on everything foward it but thats just a guess.

JMO and congrats on the new ride.

I just installed the Borla stingers this morning and then drove the car all afternoon. I enjoyed the sound of the stock exhaust but it was a bit too quiet for my blood. The Borla definitaley makes the car sound mean. I love it. I am going to the shop in a few minutes to start the Vararam install. I'll report back with my impressions.

I put a vararam on, and I like it.

Here are your basic bolt ons.
1. Intake or Zip tie
2. Headers
3. Cat Back
4. LS1 Edit

Then blow that bad boy if you want real power.

I have the Vararam. It was a major improvement. Well worth the $345.00 buckaroo's. Got it from RG at Exit28. :D
