What a great day it was today...
I ventured out to a local Chevy dealer that has a large selection of new and used Corvettes. I wanted to test drive a ‘95 or ‘96 six-speed vert.
I had always wanted a C4 convertible, but have always wound up with a coupe. I love the looks of the C4 verts, and I know the C4s pretty well, so I wanted to test the waters.
When we arrived at the dealer, the salesman who had sold me the ‘94 six-speed coupe I had had was working. This was great, I didn’t have to go through the rigmarole of the car salesman come-ons. I told him that I was considering a vert and that I was wanting to take one out for a test drive. He got the keys to a Arctic White vert, put the top down, and said “just bring ‘er back in about 25 minutes.” I was in seventh heaven! The car was beautiful! The sun was shinning! I had 25 minutes to drive it! I knew helping the old lady across the street was going to bring me good karma!
I was a good boy with it for the first 15 minutes as I wanted to get familiar with the car, then, I started to wonder about the go power of the LT1 compared to my LT4. It has been five years since I’ve driven an LT1 (I traded my ‘94 for the LT4) and I had honestly forgotten how the LT1’s run.
Well, as I hit the go pedal, I felt like a kid who had just lost his sparkley helium balloon. The LT1 felt like it was standing still compared to my LT4 if I would have performed the same action in it. I was amazed at the power difference between the two engines. I have gotten used to the go-go of the LT4 and have taken it for granted. These LT4s are FAST in their stock form! Nevertheless, the LT1 is a great engine, I’ve owned two since ‘93, I’m not trying to knock our LT1 brethren.
I can only imagine the thrill LT-5 and Z06 owners must have when they press the go pedal. I would almost hate to drive either now because I’d hate to loose another sparkley helium balloon.
