Corvette At Goodwood

GM's Corvette brand (now divorced from the Chevrolet name on this side of the Atlantic) is using the Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 24-26 for the European debut of the high-performance Z06.

The term "high-performance" is relative, of course. In standard form, the Corvette coupé is very quick, thanks to its six-litre 400bhp V8 engine. But the Z06 has seven litres and produces 500bhp, which is enough to create performance figures of a 190mph top speed and 0-60mph in under four seconds.

There are structural differences, too. The Z06 uses carbonfibre in its bodyshell, and in the interests of increased stiffness its roof is not detachable. It's also available only with six-speed manual transmission - the standard coupé has an automatic option.

The Z06 was developed in conjunction with the C6-R race car. Its predecessor, the C5-R, was the most successful competition Corvette ever, with 35 wins in 55 events, four American Le Mans Series championships and three double victories in the Le Mans 24 Hour race.
