ASC Motorsports Has Highs and Lows at Laguna Seca
Tiffin, Oh - May 6, 2005 ASC Motorsports experienced the high of showing improvement in every practice session and in qualifying, only to experience the low of an engine problem during the running of the Road & Track 250 at the famed Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway.
The crew did an amazing job fine-tuning the race car and adjusting it to suit the drivers and the hilly, twisting road course. Drivers Zach Arnold of Tiffin, Ohio and Jason Workman of Atlanta, Georgia alternated running the Corvette C5R on the highly technical circuit, becoming familiar with the Corvette's revised handling characteristics and learning the course layout.
With quality feedback from Arnold and Workman, the crew used the time between practice sessions to adjust the Corvette's suspension and balance. The work paid off as the steadily improving race car moved further up the timesheets in every practice session. Both drivers said the car was handling perfectly and was as quick as it had ever been.
In the 15-minute qualifying session, Arnold raced the car into 13th on the GT class starting grid, the best start yet for the young team in only its third race.
Arnold started the race and soon made his way up to 7th position in class. But, on the 15th lap he told the crew the engine was suffering from a loss of power. Arnold brought the car into the pits and the crew carefully checked out the engine. He returned to the track for a few more laps, but the lack of power forced him to drive it into the garage, where the crew found that a valve spring had broken.
While the finish was much less than hoped for, ASC Motorsports continued to improve as it learned more about setting the car up for a highly technical road course and also succeeded in preparing a race car that was very competitive from the drop of the green flag.
The popularity of the Rolex Grand American Sportscar Series continued to soar as the combined 52 Daytona Prototype and GT cars entered in the Road & Track 250 event of the California Sportscar Invitational was the largest field ever assembled for the Grand Am series.
The next race for ASC Motorsports in the Rolex Grand American series will be the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, New York. The race will be televised live on SPEED Channel in two segments at 10:00 AM (EDT) and continuing at 12:30 PM.
