MID-OHIO SPORTS CAR COURSE SEASON OPENER TO AIR ON CBS
DUBLIN, Ohio (February 24, 2005) -- The 44th year of racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course kicks off the season with a visit by the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) the weekend of May 20-22, 2005. The race is currently set to start at 12 noon to accommodate live national coverage on CBS.
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course hosts the third race of the 10 race 2005 schedule for the ALMS a month earlier than normal. This allows many of the competitors a final test at one of the country's most physically and technically demanding tracks before going to Le Mans, France to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
"I think it's important that we go to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and have a good showing before we go to Le Mans," said Clint Field, defending LMP2 class winner at Le Mans. "It's a great track to go to before the 24 hour race because it gives us a good reference point for where we are at as a team."
The top manufacturers in the world will once again use the American Le Mans Series to showcase their latest technology. General Motors continues to back Corvette Racing which recently completed the third official test of the new Corvette C6-R. Following the three days of private track time, Corvette drivers Johnny O'Connell, Ron Fellows, Oliver Gavin and Max Papis all had upbeat remarks about the new C6-R chassis that will officially debut at the American Le Mans Series Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.
"We are still just at the beginning of the development cycle and you can feel that the new Corvette has big potential," said Papis. "We know that we have to expect improvements step by step, but I've been very impressed from the day I drove the new C6-R."
Also featured during the weekend events, will be support races from the Trenton Forging SCCA SPEED World Challenge, Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship Series, Formula BMW USA and the newly formed IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge presented by Michelin.
The SCCA SPEED World Challenge. Regarded as the most relevant and top production car road racing series in the world, the SCCA SPEED World Challenge Championships are broken into two distinct sub-series that run separately from one another -- SCCA SPEED GT and SCCA SPEED Touring Car. Each Championship is run in a 50-minute "sprint" race format, featuring recognizable cars, world-class drivers and standing starts.
The Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship Series is an open wheel developmental series with machines that are capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, with a top speed in excess of 150 mph and lateral acceleration is 2.0g.
While at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Formula BMW USA will complete rounds three and four out of their 14 race schedule. In their second year of competition, Formula BMW USA is an open wheel developmental series that will run in support of American Le Mans, Formula 1, Indy Racing League, Grand American Road Racing Series and the Champ Car World Series. Formula BMW USA has major factory support from BMW North America.
The newly formed IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge presented by Michelin will compete in just their second race when the series visits Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The series will allow amateur and semi-professional drivers, those who do not make their living in motorsports, to compete in a professional environment, similar to many other GT3 Cup series around the world and will run as part of the American Le Mans Series weekends.
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is a 2.4-mile, 15-turn permanent road racing circuit in Lexington, Ohio. Located 60 miles north of Columbus and 75 miles south of Cleveland near Mansfield, the track has been called the most competitive in the U.S. and annually hosts a diversity of locally, regionally and nationally sanctioned racing events for amateur, club and professional riders and drivers. Mid-Ohio's 2005 schedule features six spectator events, including American Le Mans at Mid-Ohio (May 20-22), Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio (June 24-26), AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days (July 15-17), Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire (July 22-24), EMCO Gears Road Racing Classic (August 26-28) and SCCA National Championship Runoffs® presented by Kohler (September 19-25).
