Stories to Watch for Trans-Am Toronto Race
Posted by: MSulka on Jul 06, 2005 - 10:00 AM
Points leader Randy Ruhlman will make his 150th Trans-Am start this weekend, which will tie him with his team owner, Jim Derhaag, for third on the all-time start list.
Ruhlman is one of the few drivers who competed here prior to last season. Ruhlman raced here in 1993, while Paul Gentilozzi and Greg Pickett competed here in 1993 and 1994.
If Paul Gentilozzi wins the race this weekend, he will move out of tie with the legendary Mark Donohue for the most wins in Trans-Am history: 30.
With a win, Greg Pickett will become the first driver to win a race in each of four decades of Trans-Am competition.
A Paul Gentilozzi win would also be his first at Toronto coming in his 201st Trans-Am start.
In fact, no driver in this year’s field has won in Trans-Am’s three previous Toronto races.
Jaguar is seeking an event record second consecutive victory here, while a Chevrolet Corvette can win its first Toronto race this weekend.
Randy Ruhlman’s Chevrolet Corvette earned something else after Cleveland—another 25 pounds of WINS Weight. WINS (Weight Indexed Neutralization System) is designed to help even the playing the field in the Trans-Am Series.
