Nitros: Why bad publicity?

...Nitros are illegal in Europe! Install it and you may loose your insurance
VDAT (Association of German Automobile Tuners) has issued a warning against NOS. The system is dangerous, it can lead to catastrophic engine damages, the systems on the market are not adapted for specific models, and they also emphasise there are many many other risks using it :nono So it can not be homologated, because TUV (German Technical Inspection Agency) can not make standard emission tests, or measure exact engine power – because NOS is injected only for a few seconds and thereby tests can not be made as required by law. There is also a legal question of transporting NOS (HAZMAT regulations).
So, NOS is bad stuff in Europe! This really s###s. :argue

Is it really so dangerous, or we're just talking bad publicity here?

It seems to be used pretty much in USA, and as far as I heard it should be safe if maintained properly. NOS will not be street legal in Europe that is for sure, but is it street legal in USA? Does anybody use it in a tuned VETTE? :t

I think that's just a reflection of the typical zeal many European governments have to "regulate" everything and to specify everything you're allowed to do; here in the U.S., our legal system tends instead to specify everything you're NOT allowed to do.

Takes our legislators and "social engineers" longer to "catch up" with what's going on - they haven't mounted an all-out attack on Nitrous systems yet. They're too busy with simple politics, trying to get re-elected, and staying out of the scandals.

Nitrous Systems are not "street" legal in Georgia. It can be installed in the car but not armed and ready to use while on public highways. But you can transport it to the track installed in your vehicle. This law was just passed recently due to the number of dumb ricers causing problems.. BY the way most large insurance companies here would cancel your policy over nitrous if they knew about it...

Having lived in Germany, and the UK, I will agree they tend to be a bit extreme on mods...but on the other hand if you could see some of the crap on the streets here you might want some "regulation" :eek

i am pretty sure the use of NOS on streets is illegal period. You can legally carry it and have it installed but if they catch you using it(not sure how they would) there are some pretty heafty fines if not jail time.

in general NOS is a rather safe way to get some extra boost, when NOT over done and with in reason.(i.s. it would be alot more reasonable for someone to put 100 shot on a V8 than some kid(yes I am one) putting a 150 shot in their 4banger) thats how it gets its bad rep.

politics in the US is a joke and if they ever catch up to regulation(more than now) it will be a long time

yes people have put it in vettes and it is really easy to do, pop the bottle in the rear middle storage compartment, have an electronic bottle opener and put the sprayers under the air bridge conceal the lines behind others and there you go 100% hidden.

If you get pulled over and a policeman discovers the NOS system under the hood… do you get a fine? You were not using it, it is just installed, but you can arm it anytime… And let's say you do not use it on the public roads, it is installed for the future Drag Race competitions. :cool

you can NOT be fined if you dont use it on the roads...if they come up see the NOS bottle and it is unarmed and the bottle valve is closed you are 100% legal to have the system installed.

one at a track or special not government property area you are legal to use it.

but then again if you do a good job a casual browser will not be able to tell if you have NOS at all

yes I do have my permit but I am only allowed to drive our 96 bonniville SE, which I want for myself sooo badly (the first pontiac bonnie hot rod think of that) but I am not allowed to have a car:cry "teenager" stuff is not as fun when you know your parents are going to use the car after/later that day.

BTW if you install or are going to install the NOS system I have a web address somewhere (i know I can find it) and they give picture w/description instructions on how to do it and have it completely hidden.

Here is the skinny on NOS. It is pure oxygen! When sent to the combustion chamber there is more firepower. Good stuff,but. The chambers and pistons are not constructed from materials that can sustain the heat. For those few seconds that you use it, it is like running your engine without water. There IS sustained tensile degridation within all metal parts that sees this condition. There are engines that are designed for NOS use. They use special materials and thicknesses of these materials so that they can sustain the damage for longer periods of time. Even though they are designed for this use, they too suffer the same fate, but at a slower rate.

When you install it, the hour glass sand begins to drop!!!

I think some people must be inhaling this stuff too much! NOS is a brand name and not shorthand for nitrous oxide. N2O is not pure oxygen, it is a nitrogen and oxygen molecule. Adding more oxygen requires adding more fuel to prevent lean mix. Forged pistons, fuel system upgrades, 100+ octane fuel, and ignition retarding capabilities are required on the more powerful systems.

yes it is true that nitrous is N20 and that it will shorten the life of your engine a lot everytime you use it.
