I need to know what controls the check engine light? I've looked for fuses, light bulbs, and console wiring, no luck. Could anybody offer any advice or help, please. thanks.:bash

Well you probably know the CCC monitors alot of sensors. The check engine light should light up when you turn the key on. If it dosent then the bulb or bulb socket and or printed circut board is a good place to start. I have a Helms GM service manual for my 81. You need to get this repair manual for your car. Haynes manual is a waste of paper.
A bit more info might help. Like are you still useing crossfire fuel injection or has a crate engine been installed.

Could the CCC just not indicate the check engine light, but work everything else? The check engine light never comes on, I've swapped known good bulbs and installed a new printed circuit board, no luck.

Check if there is 12v on one of the wires that go to the check engine light. If not then the problem is in the wiring or the ECM.
I think your service manual should indicate what to check if the light doesn't come on when the key is in the run position. :)

I'll look in the manual and start chasing wires and probably buy a computer anyway. Maybe while chasing wires I can fix the volts reg. too, thanks.

I'd think the owners manual would tell you when you should see the check engine light, but the service manual is a great tool to have! If it's not set by the ECM when you test it, you can check for 12v but you'd never see it.
