I have just completed replacing the intake manifold gasket. I started the car and checked the timing. It was within 2 degrees. I set the timing but I have noticed I am not getting any oil to the rockers. I assume the distributor is in wrong but it is in time and runs, albeit with a distinct ticking. What do I need to do?
The camshaft gear drives the distributor gear. A shaft from the distributor drives the oil pump.
If you have normal oil pressure, the engine is running, the idle speed is normal, you adjusted the timing, the distributor must be installed correctly.
If you installed new rocker arms, assuming the lifters are good, no oil coming out of the push rod usually indicates the rocker for that valve is not adjusted properly.
First look at how many threads on the rocker stud are exposed compared to a rocker that oil comes out of.
That's a good indication the rocker is adjusted correctly or very close to being correct.
Back the rocker nut off the rocker that has no oil coming out of it 1 turn and start the engine. Slowly turn
the rocker nut 1/4 turn and let the engine idle adjust to the change. Continue to turn the nut 1/4 turn
and again wait for the engine idle to adjust. At some point you should see oil coming out of the push rod.
If after adjusting the rocker the engine idle does not recover and runs worse, indicating the rocker is to tight, stop and call for Mr. Goodwrench. :L
