No Power To Fuel Pump Please Help!!!!!

First off thanks in advance for any help. We have a 1989 that died after leaveing the house last wednesday. It seemed as if it weren't getting any fuel. We replaced the fuel pump but the new one didn't work either. Just to see what would happen we hooked the old one up directly to a battery and it worked. Tested the wires at the wiring harness by the fuel tank and they don't seem to be getting any power. So we have it narrowed down to no power reaching the fuel pump can anyone help?? Where is the fuel pump relay located at exactly. We got a new relay and put it on. Just want to make sure we switched out the right relay. Totaly lost on this one.

Forgot to say that the motor turns over but it doesn't start. It started once and ran for about 1 minute then it died again. Thanks again.

Did you check the fuse? Relay is on the firewall between the WW wiper motor and the power brake booster.

Yes forgot to mention we did check the fuse and it was good. And that was the relay we switched out. Still lost on this one.

I would check the oil pressure and the oil pressure switch. If one of them is not indicating oil pressure it shuts down the fuel pump so you do not distroy the engine.

Check the wiring for the relay socket, as well... when mine had a no-pump condition, I found that the insulation on the wires under the socket had deteriorated to the point that the wires contacted and kept the pump from running.

I had that problem a couple of years ago and the sending unit was bad......they replaced it and the fuel pump and never had anymore trouble. Good luck...

Interesting subject. All of the above are possibilities. Lots of things can shut down the fuel pump. The computer knows if the car is running, if engine stops (for what ever reason) the fuel pump relay is de-energized by the computer.
