No Scanner - Checking for Codes?

Is there a way to check for codes possibly set without having some type of scanner? Like jumpering across a couple of pins on a connector and watching the check engine light flash in a pattern? If so, can someone describe connection points and where I might find it.

Use this site. Click on "Fact Sheets". The year you have will determine the type of DLC you have. 12 or 16 pin.
