After 27 years of wanting one I finally put it all together and bought a 1965 327 coupe. The car has had some restoration work but still needs several things done (thats why I bought it)
One thing is driving me a little crazy is the noisy transmission. I'm not sure which tranny I have, maybe the "rock crusher". The trans shifts well, has all its syncros, doesn't pop out of gear, but it rattles like crazy in all forward gears except 4th.

A local shop estimates about $1250.00 to rebuild it, although the estimate was given over the phone and they have not seen the car.
Is this about right? I don't have the facilities to remove the trans myself so I must farm it out.
Thanks in advance!!

What makes you think the noise is not

NORMAL... My rock crusher is noisy too! and it ONLY has 10K miles on it.
Does it shift funny? grind gears?

Could it be the rear end?

You need to have somebody who KNOWS about these cars & trannys to drive the car & check it out.

Other suggestions
for $1250.00
Killer stereo
Loud pipes
sound deading padding
( replace shifter boot )

I have a friend with a 65 coupe/327/4-spd, and his shifter rattles all the time. It's normal for that to rattle--no shims, no teflon, nothing but metal on metal. Is that the rattle you're hearing, or is it something else?

Amos and vigman,
My shifter is okay. 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears in the tranny sound like a garbage disposal with two soup spoons caught inside! Once you put it in fourth gear there is no more noise. I'm gonna pull the ransmission and have it rebuilt + a new clutch, throw-out bearing and pilot shaft. If it still makes noise I will learn to live with it.

Thanks for the replies

OUCH

If you put the car in neutral ( as you are moving ) the noise goes away?

Funny analogy though

The shift linkages MIGHT not be throwing far enough.

I assume you checked/changed the tranny fluid?

Sounds like bad syncros though.

Good luck

And do not forget!

get a needle bearing pilot bushing...not really stock...but better!

My shifter has always vibrated..usually at 60 MPH and above...I think it's the sleeve but nothing really can be done other than putting a towel over it to nock out the noise if you are going long distances...

If you were 37 years old you'd wish you could vibrate...

Own 67 roadster with no vibes on shifter. Big block with side pipes so I cant tell if there is any noise. Half deaf since I owned it. Saw a couple of trans at swap meet here for 550 and 600 bucks.Suppose to not whine. $1200 seems a little stiff to me Don

I have a 67 BB and the trans is fine, I doubt that you have a M-22 but if you find you do then noise is normal (why do you think they call it rock crusher). I would have a corvette mechanic from a club look at it before doing anything. Free advice and honest too. Good luck.

Sounds like a pilot bearing...
