not so smooth shifting

Little help from you tech guys. I've noticed that shifting my 04 Z, it can be a little say " not so smooth". I don't think its an adjustment issue as maybe that's just the way the trans is. It's got 64k miles. Any recomendations, is a better trans oil, maybe royal purple a good start...?

First step is to make sure the clutch, itself, is in good condition. With 64,000 miles, it's possible you have a clutch issue and may need to put a new disc in it.

Second is to flush and bleed the clutch hydraulics per the service manual.

Third, is to change the trans lube to Red Line MTL.

If shift effort issues persist, you may need to overhaul the trans.

Thanks Hib. It's not that its difficult or hard, its just not real smooth. I recently just purchased my Z, and maybe its just a characteristic of the trans. I'm wondering, does the 6 speed normally shift real smooth, or is what I'm experiencing normal..?

My 01 ZO6 shifts harder than my 03 Z-51,My guess is it's the Z06's shorter throw on the shifter!

I have Royal Purple in both mine for a couple years now, "I'm not really very Impressed"!~!~!:eyerole:eyerole:eyerole

I'm going to try Hib's recommendation's next if I can find it around here!

Unless the shifter is aftermarket, the C5 Z06 shifter has the same throw-length as a base C5.

If shift effort is abnormally high, it's either clutch, a clutch hydraulics, lubricant, linkage adjustment or internal issue.

The TREMEC T56 in our 04 Z06 shifts like a hot knife through butter.

The trans is in good condition. The shifter is stock. The clutch is a McLeod. The hydraulics use a McLeod master cylinder a stock slave and are flushed and bled annually. The lubricant is Red Line Superlight Shockproof gear lube and gets changed about every three years.

The other Red Line lubes which work well in the T56 is D4 ATF or MTL. They might be better choices for non severe-duty applications.

I would install Redline D4 ATF in the transmission, and perform the shifter adjustment (which is critical to shift performance). Those two procedures usually make a noticeable difference in shifting quality. Good luck with it.

Unless you have a mechanical issue,many of us C5Z guys have used the "anti-Venom" mod with some success.

Putting some washers on the trans detent screw can make shifting easier.

Easiest way to fix shifting problems in cars since 1993 is order a skip shift eliminator online (under 20 bucks) & plug in to the module that controls the trans. Unpluging the trans module might work too.The module controls shifting for fuel economy but makes shifting very difficult.
