Hi , have a question you juys may be able to help with.
Im run a bit over 10;1 compression in my 78 vette, and even with 98 octane fuel we have in aussie, she still wants to ping and run on.
Have had the dizzy re calibrated, and hotter plugs put in and altough it is a little better its still not right.
Does running a can of octane booster in a tank of fuel have any effect,
and does it cause any problems to the tank bladder and carby seals.
regards from downunder, Ernie.:beer

98 octane should be plenty for that car. Octane booster a container per tank shouldn't harm anything, but it takes a lot of booster to do any good.I think your timing may still be off a little.

Hey embuild
I run my 81/350 on 98 NZ gas (which is sh??t) and its also 10:1 compression with no apparent problems, I agree with vett boy it sounds to far advanced.
The only other reasons Ive heard on this issue, is carboned up piston crowns or cam installed incorrectly in advanced position.
Good Luck

You sure don't want hotter plugs! That alone could cause your problem. Try going back one or two heat ranges.

Do you know if the AU octane rating system for gasoline is the same as here in N. America? It's possible that what's rated as 98 for you is equivalent to 89 or 91 for us.

octane rating

Vettehead Mikey,
dont know wether our fuel is rated differently to the states but would have thought an octane rating would be the same world
wide as standard.
I think i may have found out what is causing my running on problems though
I believe the primaries in the carb dont shut off straight away, and is still getting fuel running down even after shutting her down.
Any ideas that can help would be appreciated.

Cheers Ernie.:beer

I know the gasoline rating system is different in the UK/Europe than it is here, not sure how your gas down under is rated.

Glad you found your problem. :beer

Mike

PS- Montreal is in Canada, not the US. I though all you Kiwis knew the difference! ;)

honest mistake

I was just pulling your chain about the kiwi/aussie thing. I've spent enough time in each country to know the difference.

My company has an office in Brisbane - Eagle Park to be exact.

Great to see someone left over there to talk to.
While ive got your attention though were you aware that the corvette convention in 2007 is being held in queensland, on the gold coast.
Would love to see some of our south sea brothers over here for the event.
I will be contacting clubs in NZ in the coming months with more details, but in the meantime spread the word around because it is going to be a great event.
Regards Ernie. [president Corvette Club of Queensland.]

PS look forward to sharing some fush&chups with you sometime.:D

Hey Ernie

Sounds Great, weve just had our nationals in Rotavegas (Rotorua) which I missed (was working) but it sounded great.
Send me some contact & info details, as we are in Aussie a lot on business etc, so maybe in country at that time anyway.

I was reading this and got curious.. If you believe Wikipedia.. ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating
Under Measurement methods:
...
In most countries (including all of Europe and Australia) the "headline" octane that would be shown on the pump is the RON, but in the United States and some other countries the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, sometimes called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), Road Octane Number (RdON), Pump Octane Number (PON), or (R+M)/2. Because of the 10 point difference noted above, this means that the octane in the United States will be about 4 to 5 points lower than the same fuel elsewhere: 87 octane fuel, the "normal" gasoline in the US and Canada, would be 91 in Europe.
...

Why do they have to make it difficult ?? :crazy..

For the same reasons that the rest of the world uses 220V instead of 110V.......

For the same reasons that the rest uses PAL or SECAM instead of NTSC...........

Just have to be different.
