Happened to me tonight on the way to my sisters house. I fired up the car, and it stalled. Thought, hmmm, weird! Re-fired it, and it stalled again. S*** was my first word. Then I looked down and saw it"Pull key, wait 10 seconds" I swear to God I thought my heart was going to come through my chest. Luckily I tried starting it about 30 seconds later and all was well.

There was only one recall for the 2004 Z06 for a suspension washer.....no column lock bypass. Should I purchase one and have one put in? or drive around in fear?

Thanks!!

Jay,
I don't know if what you're describing is a column lock issue. Besides, the column lock should be done under warranty- check with your dealer about that.

Are you getting any codes after it stalls?

Hi Jays Z06 -

The column lock problem will show a "Service column lock" message on the DIC.

I think the message you saw precedes the lock issue - you may want to have the CLB done if it has not been done already -

Here is some info on the TSB I found searching.

" Partial Text of Recall 01044A - September 6, 2001

...2. During quick cranks, the ECL lock pin may not withdraw fully and, in vehicles where there is abnormally low clearance to the lock
plate, there may be contact between the pin and lock plate. This can cause a noise or ratcheting when the steering wheel is turned or,
if there is insufficient clearance, the steering wheel cannot be turned.
If one of these conditions occurs, a crash could occur without warning.
Dealers are to remove the column lock plate on U.S. and Canadian vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. After the service
correction, the steering column will no longer lock when the key is removed.

On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, and export vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, dealers are to 1)reprogram the PCM, and 2) verify there is adequate lock plate clearance and, if necessary, replace the lock plate. After the service correction, the steering column will continue to lock when the key is removed.

Lovely!!! :-)

I'll have the CLB installed at some point.

Thanks for the replies, I'll keep you posted on how things go.

That happened to me about 3 years ago and then it never did it again....until this last June. The column lock mechanism had to be replaced to the tune of $540 plus a tow from AAA (free). My 'Vette had been in for the recall the previous year. You can change out parts at the first sign of a problem and it still won't guarantee that that the new part isn't defective too. Make sure you have good roadside assistance and throw caution to the wind. - Ron

I don't think your problem is related to column lock. But while it's on your mind get a bypass. The peace of mind is worth it.

A weak battery can also cause your same problem...

dont wait!!! order a CLB and install it, it takes about 30 minutes.
The condition will get worse before it gets better

I missed this thread earlier. I think that what you are seeing has to do with the vehicle antitheft system. I have had that happen once before, too. The car will fire up, but as soon as you try to move it, the engine is killed. You did the right thing, and I don't think it is likely that it will be a long term issue.

IT IS THE COLUMN LOCK!!!!!!

Do not pass go, do not collect $200.00, proceed directley a CLB saleperson and spend 30 minutes of your time installing it.
Problems solved never to be heard from again.

All of the issues noted in this thread are related to a failing column lock, PUT IN A CLB!!!
