I got a 350 and I was wondering what size oil to use. One of my friends said I should use 10w-40 but im not sure. It has 79k on it and I dont race it so I just want a good oil for a weekend car. What brand do you guys use/suggest? Also what brand oil filter do you use/suggest? I use fram on my daily drivers but I have just heard that they have been known to break apart and I Love my Vette so I not gonna use an POS filter like that.

Thanks in advance!
Kyle

(NOT FRAM) as well ,I will keep my eyes open for some a/c's through!

Illinois climate, 79K miles, no racing ... any name brand non-synthetic 10-40 & filter will be fine. With 79K there may be a bit of clearance in motor ... so 15-40 diesel truck oil or 20-50 performance oil may be good for hottest summer months. Don't waste your time on high-dollar synthetic oil ... regularly scheduled o&f with name-brand petro-based stuff is the most important thing; far more important than brand. I personally like wix oil filters.

:D I use Pennzoil 10-w40 and AC Filter.......

I just bought a 1977 L48 and I have been using 10W-30 oil. Why do oyu guys like 10W-40 more? Is there really a difference?

No - 'More taste. less filling' is the most relevant argument that comes to mind.

Just put in what your owner's manual says, change it once in a while and the engine will outlast you and the next bunch of owners too.

alright today I planned to change my oil so I ran over to autozone got some oil and an AcDelco filter size pf454, I looked for pf25 like you guys were talking about but I couldn't find it and im not buying fram. Well got home laid under the car and I see a AcDelco fitler pf1218. This thing is huge, The one I bought was no where close to this size so I ran back over to autozone and bought the pf1218 put it on. The car runs great. Does anyone else use this size?

They are both the same except for length and a 'back flow' valve in the PF35 (for sideways install I think ??). In about 2003 the PF454 replaced the PF25 and the PF1218 replaced the PF35. The PF35 was used on trucks, I believe. Many folks on this site use the PF1218 on their Corvettes if they have the clearance.

I tried to use the ACDelco brand (PF454 & PF1218) on my 1969 350 cu.in. but the filters were too skinny and blew the oil past (around) the filter. A Purolator filter PL20049 (PF454 equivalent) was about 3/16th inch bigger in diameter and worked just great!

Oh I see... I was just making sure if was the right one. Thanks!

Im thinking about changing oil to Shell Rotella T.10W40.Ive been reading where all the oil manufactuers are taking zinc out of oil because of the harm it does to the catalitic converter.Of course our old cars with flat tappet cams need the zinc.

The guy who's putting my 383 together highly recommended the Rotella-T 15W40. He uses it for break-in and said it would be best for the flat tappet cam. He builds race engines, so I guess he knows what he's talking about. More than me anyway. :beer
