One of my friends just bought an 82 5.7 fi

What oil should be used??

What's listed in an 82s owner's manual is no longer made by the oil industry. Fortunately, virtually all of the engine oils available to consumers, today, are far better.

If the engine is stock, any 10W30 engine oil API certified SL or SM will be fine.

If the engine has any cam or valve train modifications (such as higher lift cam, higher ratio rockers, increased spring pressure), an engine oil with higher phosphorous content may be required. The cheapest way to get that is with a light truck diesel engine oil such as Shell Rotella 10W30 or Chevron Delo 400 LE 10W30.

Any way to find out what the previous owner used??? I kind of hate to change what was used before, but that may not be a problem any more.(OLD SCHOOL OF THOUGHT)
