:confused My '67 Convertible has the original 427/390 with a m-22 Close ratio trans and a 4.13 (?) rear. The car seems to run great, but doesn't seem to have as much power as it should. I can spin the repro radials tires all day leaving the line (I don't), but can't seem to leave any rubber going into 2nd or 3rd. Could this be due to clutch wear even though i have not seen any slippage?

maybe, but I'd check your plugs and timing.

Let me drive it... Dave..

No really... Has it ever? What makes you think it should? I mean if I remember corrrectly you purchased this car last year have you done the normal stuff, Replaced the plugs, wires, vac can, checked the timing, etc?? Just asking..

Where in NC are you? It's nice to know others around the state... Dave..

Change the plus when I got it. Probably need to do a tuneup anyway first. I'm in Wilmington.

You may be right about the RPM. Generally I shift it at 4K or so. It still seems to have alot of torque though. Maybe I'm just a wimp at heart!

When people say the get rubber in 1st,2nd,3rd, 4th,... (still waiting for someone to say they got rubber in 5th with their Keisler) .... are they powershifting and slamming gears?

Brian

Brian I think a lot of people are letting themselves get the best of themselves when they say they can grab em in all 4 gears. Oh and if you can spin em in 5th with a Keisler you are doing something b/c that's breaking loose at high speed... Dave..

Allcoupand Wishu,

With a stock motor I agree but I have no issues with rubber in all 4 gears in my 60... no power shift or slamming

I need more motor than... Hey Bill, Mike, VNV get another 502 Ready...

Yep, 502 in your 66 should do it if you gear it right...

No BS I have no benifit in it.

1966 427/425 car 4:11'S running on sunoco 94 with the timeing retarded to run on pump gas with no detonation

The car can and will tear the tires up in 4th gear shifting up around 6100 rpms. Most big block are running out of steam and are on borrowed time at these RPMS .This is where this motor is making its power.

Power shifting? slaming gears?

As you look at the road after I have left.I leave less then a foot of clean pavement between my shifts. This is a car under 3200 lbs that ran thru the 1/4 mile in the mid 12' in stock tune with stock tires when new,may I add spinning the tire down the end of the track.

So for sure belive it when I say my car tears the tires up in 4 th gear

Cool man, Never knew it, you gotta remember I'm new to the muscle scene and all. I wish I grew up back when but I wasn't even born yet. Learned a load here and in my garage in the last two years. Hmmm I might just have to start driving mine a little harder... I still granny shift but then again I worry about that one time I might miss a shift..

Oh and back to the question at hand.. So have you got a new set of plugs and wires yet??? Go on it's only 2200 get out there and replace em.. We're waiting.. Okay so I'm not going to be waiting for long.. I'll be back in the morning to check your progress.. Oh and my offer stands if you need an extra set of hands..... Dave..

I have three big block cars. The 390 Hp 427 in my 66 is no powerhouse. Remember that the 390 was the baby 427. A 425 solid lifter motor will walk all over the 390 motor. The 390 motor runs out of steam around 5000 rpms. thats no fun. The L88 in my Grand Sport turns 7500 rpms like nothing. Your 390\427 is doing just what it is meant to do. I have a LS6 454 in my 65 Chevy Biscayne that will run circles around my 66 vette.
