I just purchase a 72 Corvette and I'm trying to idenify the original color by using the vin# I have the I'd tag on the door for color option but I'm afraid the door might of been replaced. Does anyone of a website or someone I can call for this help?

I Believe the tag should be in front of the drivers door in the door jam..
if you can post up the codes, someone should be able to tell when it was
built the color and the interior color.

The VIN does not contain any information concerning color or trim. Those codes are on the trim tag attached to the driver's door hinge post.

The time/build date for your Corvette is also on the tag in the upper right corner.

What are your codes? Why do you feel the tag may be a replacement?

1973 Vette trim tag (paint info)

73vette5.jpgHi,
My '73 vette ( previous owner had it for 35 years), has the original trim tag which reads as follows:
TRIM 418
PAINT 4001XA

I have searched all over and cannot decipher the paint code. Any suggestions on how to decode this? Also, does someone know what paint color '4001XA' represents on a build sheet? I do not have the sheet, but I am trying for a long shot here!

418 is dark saddle vinyl upholstery. I've never seen the 4001XA code.

4001 in 1973 is the paint code (chev truck) Clematis Blue

Maybe a paint to order car?

4001XA is a COPO billing code for "special paint"; could have been primer or another GM color not available on Corvettes. It would also appear on the original window sticker and tank sticker.

John,
Thanks for the reply. Can you pls provide the source for this info. ? Just for added documentation, if it turns out to be true after further research ( If I am lucky enough to find build sheet etc)

you could look on top of the gas tank for the build sheet.
that's where a lot of them were put..
BUT be VERY CAREFUL with it as it is probably very brittle.
you may have to remove the tank, take a picture of it and replace the tank.
