i do not have any original documentation on my 78 pace car. is it possible to find out exactly how and where my car was delivered?? i would love to know the exact equipment on the car at time of delivery (options, etc) and the dealership where it was sold.

i know that there are several sources (like the bowling green museum) that can provide the information for post 81 models produced. is there any chance that st louis has (and would share) the records, or that GM might be willing to provide the information (even if it was for a reasonable fee)?? i do not have a build sheet, original owner's package, part or all of a window sticker, etc. you name it, I DON'T HAVE IT, lol.

thanks for any direction you can provide.

steve

You can get a copy of the original invoice (and window sticker) from GM. It used to be free, when I got mine. I thought someone posted a thread that it now costs.

thanks. i'll see if i can find it. i appreciate the direction.

these cars had a build sheet glued on the top of the gas tank (i'm sure that you know this). but many of the cars will have another sheet under the dash, behind the center console side panels and have even been found within the frame rail at the rear. i don't think that pre 82 records were kept at st louis though. there is always a way....you just have to keep turning over all the rocks.

best of luck!

no tank sticker there, no other build sheets stuck in any of the usual places (wedged into the seats, under dash, left inside door panels, etc). the entire interior is original and i am in the process of replacing it ALL. trust me if it was stuck anywhere, i would have uncovered it by now as i a

have everything but the carpet removed (and i haven't ever heard of a production sheet being left under the carpet, lol), so i doubt there are any places left for me to find one.

that is what prompted my original information request.

srs244,

have you tried to search owner history. most pace cars have limited owners. you can try DMV records to trace if you have an idea of the state (s) where the car was registered in the past. you can try NCRS and see if this car was judged at one time (they started judging 78 thru 82's in 1996). p.s. i have the first ever 79 to receive a top flight....turn rocks!!!!!

E-mail Peggy Vezina at the GM Media Archive, gmma.research@gm.com; for $50.00 she'll send you a copy of the original dealer invoice that shows the delivering dealer and all the options as they were listed on the window sticker.

This is just a shot in the dark but I found my Pace Car build sheet tucked into the rear strut rod bracket held in place by the differential heat shield. Well preserved. Might be worth a look. Mike

John, do you know how far back they can go to get invoices?

When I ordered mine, I got the original invoice and window sticker sheet.

They only have them back to 1977 for Corvettes; no records available for prior model years.

just as a follow up, peggy is not available for a bit. seems the auto reply i got said she will be out from march 05 until 12/31/06. yes that's right 06!! the email does refer you back to the general support email address, so i have tried again at that location. i'll let you know how i make out. BTW no heat shields in place any longer, so that's not an option with this 78, lol

thanks though, it is a good suggestion under normal circumstances.

steve

here is the reply i just received from GM archives support. i hope it helps someone else out also. i appreciate all the help to get this far.

What you see there is reality at GM. Due to personnel cuts and out sourcing many of the support positions at GM no longer exist.

Outside vendors have taken over some of the jobs that used to be done within GM. If they can not make a profit doing it they will raise the prices till they do or just eliminate the service all together.

My suggestion to all those who have not gotten this documentation is to get it now. It will never be cheaper or more available. I have a 70 cpe and the documentation from the old St Louis plant is no longer available and I sure wish that I had it. I feel it adds value to the car especially if it is restored to original.
Once it is gone it never comes back.
