Our Club has many events during the summer. Today was a 40-mile jaunt to a classic car show in a quaint heritage village on the Rideau canal/lock system in Ontario, Canada. There were many events including visits to museums, shopping sprees, horse and buggy rides, and a period display of military wares from the war of 1812. As well, the locks were operating full tilt and it is fascinating to see 18th century technology still in use today. The weather was sunny with the odd cloud and about 88F (30-32C).

The Club representation attracted about 25 cars, from a 1960 through to 2005. (My 1967 is in there to justify this thread....) The convoy uses a buddy system: never lose sight of the car behind you. It can be ackward at times but it does work. The convoy also is controlled by several radios in case of breakdown or accident. We have a flatbed-trailered GMC Suburban in the event of a worst-case scenario. Speeding is not permitted (well...a bit over the limit).

The cars gather at a local service station early in the morning for coffee, chit-chat, driving instructions, directions, etc.

We had a couple of new kids on the block today. Note the 1960 in front of this one.

Pretty colour on these new cars.

Here is the Club line-up at the destination.

Here is 1967 and 2005 side-by-side. I was lost reading the instructions for the GPS positioning system and ambient temperature sensors, etc. On the latter I just stick my hand out the window. Yep, it's hot.

Fun day! But as 67Heaven knows these coupes sure can get hot. The ride home was a sauna bath. But the Canuck beer in the 'fridge was cold. So all's well that ends well.

Doug,
Most tend to be driven only 5-6 months each year (May to October) and stored in winter. Hence low mileage and free from salt and the like.

Great pics and story. Thanks for sharing. Looks like a fun easy going event.

Nice bunch of Corvettes, especially the black solid axle (and yours of course). :D

Does Merrickville have a historic pub/restaurant just up from the railroad tracks, right on the corner of the main road? Offers a sampler tray of six local beers?

Mac,
I believe you are referring to Sam McLean's Pub. Just down the way is Sam Jakes Inn, a favourite for government and private sector think-tanks/retreats. I spent many days there when I was in the corporate world. Never learned a darned thing but it was nice to get away from the office.

Paul
great pics and from the looks of it a great day! :beer

soon enough I'm hoping to be able to participate in my own club activities like that also.

congrats on another fun weekend outing with your car

That sounds right. Last year, I took a number of training courses at Kemptville and we wandered over to the pub a couple of times. One of our guys always ordered the beer sampler which ticked off the staff since they had to wash six small glasses instead of one large one. Very nice area.

Kemptville is about 15 minutes away just off the 416 on 43. So you are bang on. That town is getting trendy now for retirement folks. Too far from the city for me but a very nice area. I just bought our retirement home in Ottawa South near the Rideau River. Moving in mid-August. Going to shake up the new neighbourhood with a Corvette. Well, maybe not with Midas Turbo mufflers....Sounds like an Impala sedan. In other words no sound. I'm working on that.

paul67, I also have a 67 coupe w/ bolt on wheels. Can you tell me what kind of rims you have.. Thanks Jim

Paul, my mom-in-law lives in a condo on Baseline Road. My wife's brother lives in Kanata. We're considering retiring around Ottawa... or maybe further East... but that's still 7 years (or so) away...

Mac,
Normally people retire to the West because of the mild winters! But unlike Vancouver, real estate here is still pretty reasonably priced.

Retire is a relative term. As soon as I get a reasonable pension from the RCMP (at age 48) I'm outta here. Policing is a young man's game. I'll take my skills elsewhere, so to speak. I enjoy Vancouver but I need the nest egg of my property value.

Paul,

Sounds like a great day!
I'm sure the 40 mile ride was as much fun as the show.
Some really beautiful cars. Thanks for sharing.

Mac,
I agree. I retired with a federal government indexed pension at 51. I had the numbers. Been doing what I want and when since.
