I have to put my 78 outside, currently under a car port, its going to be going on grass....need to know if anything is better than the other to put down under, i was going to get a tarp, i currently have an outside cover on it.....any help is appreciated

Is this permanent, semi permanent or just extended parking? Parking on grass isn't a great idea - it's constantly emitting moisture onto the underside of the car, That's a pretty vulnerable place in older cars. A tarp isn't great, but it's probably better than nothing. There's lots of issues, and other forum members can probably help out with their experience.

I have a friend who owns a C6. He has to store the car outside under a "car port".

He uses two car covers and replaces the outer cover once a year.

It keeps the exterior of his car as nice as if he stored it in a garage. He uses car covers from California Car Cover.

I have heard that vehicles stored outside are a great hotel for rodents and bugs. You may want to put moth balls or something similar in the engine compartment at least to discourage the little guys looking for a home. The rodents will chew on anything, especially wires. Might also help to check the car frequently for unwanted visitors.

I read elsewhere that putting some plywood down to park on can help...it will be right outside the house so i'll be seeing it/checking it often to chamois off if necessary....i have a wolf outdoor cover and was thinking of getting a tarp of some sort to put over top of that.....i assume i should probably get another coat of wax on it before i do this

Putting a tarp over the cover is not a good idea. It will trap moisture on the car and cause damage to the paint, let alone cause rust to form where you dont want it. I too have been experimenting with outside car storage as i have a 73 alfa romeo that is stored outside. Since alfa's notoriously rust, i tried a couple of different "waterproof" car covers only to find out that no car cover is truly waterproof. The worst was a cover called xtra bond cover from coverite. With heavy rain it soaked right through. Emails went unanswered from the company. I now have a budge waterproof cover and it is a lot better with rain protection. I would buy it again. As far as being parked on the grass, i would put some kind of barrier down. A tarp would be good, but remember that plywood will retain water when soaked. Hope this helps.

I can see that being a rust magnet. If your HOA allows, consider buying/building a car port. Ideally put concrete as the base but paving bricks would look good too. Gravel is an option as well. Just put a vapor barrier underneath as well to cut down on condensation which will eat into the relatively unprotected frame metal.
You'll be killing the grass under it anyways so might as well do it right.

Thanks for the suggestions...i also have the option of parking on the street in a cal du sac, that probably seems like the best option at this point for not destroying the underneath.....if anyone wants to save me the trouble, i'd be more than happy to sell it to you ; )

Well that option sounds worse :) could get towed or wrecked into.

Storage Bag

I remember seeing an ad for a storage bag ,,, waterproof, you drive the car onto the base and zip/seal the car up might be your solution

I've heard that condensation inside the bag causes damage.

If you have to store it outside you might want to consider a product called "Garage in a Box." My brother bought one last fall to store his boat in. He picked it up at Menards. There's plenty of room for a C-3. It's priced around $300 and it held up real well to the brutal Iowa winter.

It would be a bit small, but Harley Davidson has a "bubble" for storage- has a fan and filter in one end and a flapper on the other. Run the scoot in, zip it up and plug it in. The air flow keeps the mosture out and the dust can't get there thru the filter. I'll be someone makes a bigger one.

Another option would be a mini-storage. I have a Model T Ford I kept in one for almost a year while I got my garage cleaned out.
