What kind of oil do you use in a 1988 overdrive unit?I have the plug out and the oil level is low.How high should the level be?should it be level with the bottom of the plug hole?

ATF works fine...just pump it in till it comes out of the hole. You can get a pump for 5 bucks at Auto Zone.

ATF is what you'd normally use in the overdrive unit, but did you know that if your seal between the gearbox and the overdrive unit is leaking, ATF will work in the gearbox as well. Basically, it'll just be noisier, but you can save some seal work that way, and not contaminate and ruin the overdrive unit with gear oil. ;)

ATF yes, but specifically Dexron III, is recommended per instructions which come with a new filter from Mid America.
Instead of buying a pump, you can use a 5-6 " piece of tygon tubing which will fit over the spout of an empty but clean dish soap bottle with the slide up/down spout. There is room between the underside of the floorboard and exhaust to get the bottle up there side ways even with or higher than the fill plug and squeeze.
