The cable came off one side of my garage door. It is the type with the spring across the header. Is there a good instruction site or does anybody know the proper procedure( ie. number of turns to tension the spring?? It is a single wood door with and opener.

Thanks
Mike

I'd take a walk through the yellow pages and call a garage door outfit and let them fix it - those torsion springs are really nasty and can inflict some terrible injuries if you don't know exactly what you'r doing.:(

One of the torsion springs broke on my door about a year ago. There is an excellent website that walks you through the whole procedure. Sorry, I did not save the link but just do a search and it will come up. I removed the broken spring and took it to a garage door outfit and they matched it right up. I used (2) 2 ft. pieces of rebar to load the spring, just be careful as there is a tremendous amount of stored energy there. Anyway find the website and it's doable. Charles

Its not worth the risk of getting injured or killed...get a pro to do it ..they won't charge much...don't risk it...:beer

Let me add this to the mix...the cable came off the pulley for a reason...something is not right. It can be done by you, just do a search for "tightening a garage spring' you will get a bunch of hits. You will need two bars about 18 inches long and the correct diameter to fit into the holes. You do need to find out why the cable came off. The suggestions about a pro are correct, but a man got to do what a man got to do. Good luck

Here is a PDF file about installing doors

"...but a man got to do what a man got to do..."....:L ...but we're not talking about sex...you can get a piece of bar through your skull ...or worse it could knock your weenie off...:L :w

I've had a few service calls to replace door springs or cables. One time I even had to repair the ceiling and the wall where shrapnel went through. Thankfully nobody was in the garage in the middle of the night when the spring broke.

Every service call I've had done was cheap, only took a few minutes when done by a guy that does this many times a day and there was no blood spilled. Believe me, these things are dangerous if you slip while winding the spring or you don't get the cable secured properly.

Sure, you could probably do it yourself but it's kind of like home dentistry, if you get what I mean.

What???...Nevermind......................leaving>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>..

Home Depot refused to sell me a new garage door without having a professional installer hang it due to the liability associated with the torsion spring. I said I can do it myself! They said that's wonderful, but we ain't sellin' to you unless! :(

JonM has a good point. Need to find out why it failed.
