After pulling out this sensor on my car to see if corrected a problem in a Trans Am, I am now left this code set.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be the problem?

The crankshaft position sensor did not throw a code prior to removing it, and then simply replacing it.

I hate to just go and buy a replacement and hope for the best.

Thanks in advance.

I have reset the PCM with my scan tool, and have also disconnected the negative terminal, and the code comes right back.

This is just a drop kick & punt but you might try and re set your timmig with the distributor. It might be all tied in and give a new value on the crank angle..;shrug

just my .01

magmotor - how would I go about re setting the timmig with the distributor?

What kind of scan tool do you have?
If it's a full function tool, you should be able to clear this code.
You may have bent, damaged, or pushed back one of the terminals in the connector. Also look at the end that goes into the timing cover. If it looks scratched, it may have collided with the timing ring on the other car. If that's the case, it may be damaged.
If your tool won't clear it. The computer should clear it if after three successful "trips" have been made and there's no problem. A trip is defined as when you drive the car normally, and bringing it up to temperature, shift through all gears and cruise for about at least 5 minutes at highway speed, park it and turn the key off.
The sensor is used only for misfire detection. Outside of the light being on you shouldn't notice any difference.
If you're able to clear it with a scan tool and the code comes right back, then there's a problem with either the sensor or connector.
If that's the problem, let me know. Then you'll have to do some further testing.
Good luck!

My scan tool clears all codes so maybe the sensor is damaged.

AutoZone has a Wells sensor for $37. Should I chance it with them rather than a OEM replacement?

Autozone doesn't make their own parts. I wouldn't be suprised if they got it from Delco. If the sensor doesn't work properly, the computer will spit out a code. If the connector on the car's harness looks OK, maybe you should just check the terminals for their proper reading. Do you have a digital voltmeter?
I don't like replacing parts without verifying things.
It's your call. If you want I can you send you the diagnostic checks if you want.

Nick, I agree I hate to just go replacing parts. If you have diagnostic information. I would sure like to test it before I blindly replace it.

Thanks.

Hi there,
Just remember, that contact with the teeth on the crankshaft pulley will also create this code.
If you are looking at your crankshaft data, you will see an offset of more than 10 degrees when running, is this what you see?????
If so, then you probably have a damaged sensor.
If not, then there is something else causing the issue.
Just out of curiosity sake, what year did you install this in????
Were there any other codes set?????
Is there any damage to the timing cover, where the sensor mounts to????

The scan tool that I have is pretty basic. I don't get any specific crankshaft data.

We put the sensor in a 1997 LT1 in a Trans Am.

The codes that are set on my car is P0336 & P0337.

Hope this helps, and thanks for the help.

HI there,
On your data list for your scan tool, I would suggest that you check on the engine rpm data and see if anything is indicated.
Do you see your TACH move????
Also, Just remember that the same wire that supplies voltage to your optispark distributor, ALSO supplies your crankshaft sensor.
What this tells you, is that if your car runs, then it is most likely the sensor.
If you dropped it once, you probably broke it.
