Help!

My 1999 C5 coupe with 27,500 miles is having problems with the fuel guage. It does not display accurate fuel levels. Several examples: It showed 3/4 full, but took 10.5 gallons to fill. Several times after fill-up, it will read full for 100 - 125 miles. Then suddenly, it will begin to read lower. After the engine is turned off and the car restarted, the guage will read full again, even though I have driven at least 100 miles.

At 13,288 miles (July 2000), I experienced the "low fuel" warnings and guage dropping to empty problem. My dealer called Chevrolet Technical Assistance (case #4084583) and then replaced two fuel modules (part #88896043). That eliminated the problem until now. I later learned a TSB was issued after that repair.

I do not get the "low fuel" warnings now. The fuel guage is no longer accurate.

Any suggestions or ideas? The new car warranty has expired, but I have the GMPP. Thank you.

Hi there,
Yes, a few suggestions here.
First, have you gotten a Tech 2 readings for both sending units????? You stated that both sending units were replaced????? The part numbers are different left and right respectively.
I am suspecting that there are one of 2 conditions happening here.
First, maybe the level arms are bent, creating inaccurate readings.
Second, that maybe the sending unit, or units are showing inaccurate resistance values for a given level.
I would first start out, by getting a snapshot of the sending units output to the PCM, for the data is read here, and then sent to the IPC for decoding, and broadcast.
Just remember, you can see this level indication at both the PCM and the IPC. Also, you can do a sweep test with the Tech 2 to confirm that the IPC cluster is working correctly.

c4c5specialist,

Thanks for the information. The part number I posted was listed twice on the invoice from the dealer from 2000, with the notation of "replace fuel modules". I guess they did not list the proper part number or did not replace the correct part.

I do not have a Tech 2 - I guess I will take the car to the dealer for repair. Thanks for your help.
